Default LS2 6.0L common problems, Things to look for when buying a 6.0l LS2 car???

Hey everyone, I may be buying an LS2 6.0L HSV Grange, Iv never had an 8 or dealt with one before.

I wana know what to look out for.
Things i should look further into upon inspection.

What are common problems on these monster engines?
Eg would be on a v6 alloytec is the the oil pressure sensor is a common fault or the timing chains stretching.
I wana know things like that for the LS2 6.0lL.

Also from owners with the same engine how is the fuel consumption on these?
Whats ur avg L/Km at what speed and how many Ks to a tank.

Any info will help out alot.

    Cheers
    Dave.

I've no idea, but can say the Grange is awesome and sophisticated. Hope you get a good one.

From what i understand the LS2's are pretty bullit proof. (no bias).

Things to look out for are any odd noises. Eg, if the thing is running a stock cam the engine should be whisper quiet.

There shouldn't be any excessive shake. I remember when I was first looking at Clubbies I was very surprised how quiet and smooth the engines where.

Thus why I ended up with a loud and shakey cammed monster instead.

No issues in regards to timing chains with the LS2's as far as I have heard.

Blow-by is pretty much an issue with ALL the LS engines but a revised valley cover helped the situation with the LS2. Though a catch can will not go astray.

    Good luck.

Considering I have a mid cam and 4.11's... you probably don't want my answer.

Haven't had any issues with it all (touch wood)- I love it!

As for fuel lol, I tend to average around 12.2-12.5 (combined), when considering my old VZ SV6 ran at 10.2 I'd take that! Especially with the power on tap.

Spark plugs are a bitch though.

I get low 10's to mid 14's per 100klm's. What issues have you had with the spark plugs?

My cousins cammed VZ SSV gets 15s easy around town(3.9s and 6spd manual)and 9s on the highway. Can get ugly when pushed though.

Car is mafless tuned by West Torrens Dyno Centre.

Average speed is 40kmph. It's 4.11's with a T56-m12 which has higher gearing than the regular T56 to start with.

And I'm not overly impressed with the tune, it's quite "safe" and a bit wastefull.

Such thing. He's either got a VZ SSZ or a VE SSV.

    Ah K, sweet.

So yeah, his gearing would be better than mine as he will be running the T56 box.

So his box with the 3.9's would be about the same as my box with 3.73's. So that causes my economy to be a bit worse. I mean for example, I can use 6th gear from 70kmph. Usually 6th is reserved for cruising in 6th. lol.

Plus cam size would affect it. If he's got a baby cam then you would expect he would be getting better economy than me.

Either way, when you floor a cammed 6.0L, fuel economy is not something that it going through your head.. lol.

His car has made me go out and get a LS car and have some fun.I had 346rwkw's in my Ford out their but it just wasnt me,I need the V8 influence lol.

The reason for his fuel economy is that the tune was rather lengthy in setup,my miss's family owns/runs the dyno centre so it had alot of low speed tuning done also.Cam is over 600thou lift.He is able to let 5th go down to 50 and still pull away without any chug making daily driving alot less hassle so to speak.

He works in the mines and is single so he would buy a servo to keep on board if he could. He hardly ever gets this fuel useage numbers though.Like you said, you dont own the said vehicle to worry about fuel.

That's true, you don't own a V8 to worry about fuel usage, however it does reflect how efficient the tune is.

Jesterarts, who tuned yours? Those kind of figures says to me the target AFR is a fair bit out. I wouldn't be happy either. I come from the belief that even a slightly rich tune is still unsafe. I really don't understand why tuners don't tune properly to the correct target AFR. It's just sloppiness so they can have a quicker turn over of cars!

Just replacing them-- quite expensive for a pack compared to the Alloytec's.

I'd be really happy with those figures on an 8 as I'm getting 16l per 100km on a 6 atm, and with sensible driving. Hmm cheaper to run an 8 than my car. Lol

It does depend on a lot of factors though, i.e. driving style, do you tend to rev up to 3500-4000 before allowing gears to change, traffic, fuel used and the like.

When I drove up to the Gold Coast and back I averaged 9.7L/100km across just over 4000km, whereas its normally in the mid-12's

The LS2's are awesome cruisers- just eat up k's without you noticing, I reckon its one of the best non-European engines going around!

Let us know how you go with your search and (hopeful) purchase!

Hahah thats about the same i get around town taking it easy 17/18L and get around 300 - 330kms to a tank, joys of having a fairly large cam in stop start traffic, although 1hr on the highway i got it down to 14L or so

As for the OP deff look at getting a catchcan as Jesterarts mentioned earlier, worth the money, mine catches a fair bit of crap over a couple months

Now Saving for a Harrop HTV2300 Supercharger kit!
