Default About to buy a car, but owner wants to keep his custom plates

    Hi Guys,

About to buy a VX S II, but I asked for a discount because the front bar is quite damaged/various marks/sratches etc. he has agreed to drop 1K from the price if a let him keep his custom plates. The car is registered until 15 July 2012.

Question is, what is the proceess to change the plates and can it be done in one day at Vicroads?

Is there a transfer fee for the plates and who should pay this?

And does the rego period reset? or stay the same?

Anything else to watch out for in this process?

    Thanks.

I know here in Qld I swapped personalized plates off my car, when bought it. Rta just handed over plates across the counter, gave me a slip stating the change was legal and posted out the new rego label to me. There was a small fee, but can't remember how much, but was nothing really ~$50 or so.

If its like S.A. it is convoluted and everyone has to give the Dept of Transport money for nothing. That’s how they roll. Here the owner has to go in and change the plates before he sells it to you and pay money. As I said it’s convoluted. I suggest you contact your rego dept before making the transaction.

Why don't you ring VicRoads/RTA/NRMA or whatever.

They'll give you the correct information.

The seller has to go to VicRoads and purchase standard plates and transfer them on the car which costs $50. It doesn't affect the registration in any way. VicRoads will send out another rego stick with the new plates printed on it but thats about it.

Let the seller worry about it. All you need to do is front up with the cash after he's sorted it.
