i put new oil in my vn it was shell helix 15w- 50 (for high milage cars) my car has 220xxx on the clock and im wanting to change the oil again cause it was black as black when i got the car and put the new oil in and its started going black again so i want to know whats a good oil and what thickness i should use
thanks jack.
Its going black again because there was so much dirt and shit in the engine and your new oil is slowly cleaning it out. Just use the same oil again, it should be fine, or a decent 20W50 which is the normal grade for Buicks and Ecotec's. After a few changes it won't go black so quick.
did you change the oil filter, as well as the oil ?
I went to supercheap and got the cheapest 4L 20W50.
Dropped oil out added cheap oil went for 30min. drive dropped oil out changed filter added new good 20W50.
Then did a 2500k oil and filter change
Then at 5000k cleaned it up well.
I do 5000K oil and filter changers.
The guy who had the car for ten years did 10000K changers.
Not long after I got the car the pickup clogged up in the sump there was a big ball of carbon crap.
My oil is not black anymore

so either 15w-50 or 20w-50 but whats a good brand just anything thats not kmart that shits not even any good for paddok bombs
Yeah pretty much. Finding good 20W50 on the shelves is slowly getting harder and harder because all the modern cars use thinner oils.
Don't use castrol GTX or GTX2, they are cheapo oils. There's a decent Castrol edge 20W50, a Valvoline maxlife i think its called for high mileage cars, and a few others.
Check the label it must be either either 15W50 or 20W50 and say SM-CF ( The SM rating is the quality of the oil. Cheapo stuff has lower ratings like SG, SH, SL .... )
A VN with 220 K's is obviously a high Km car so those high mileage oils should be good for you. You will probably burn more oil if you use a 15W50 so watch out for that.
ok thanks also what oil filter just any brand or a certian brand
Just my opinion most filters are more or less the same. You can choose between Holden, Repco, Ryco, and Valvoline. They should all be between $6-12
Get gulf western XP 20W-50 it's a good oil but cheap, delcowizzid on here uses it in turbo buicks...
I used to run the cheap everyday nulon 20w-50 and cane my car a fair bit, oil visibly broke down by 5000 clicks. GW comes up really good i'm impressed especially given the price. I think its just a good base oil with a decent additive package and it certainly suits these cars
I use Holden genuine filters (looked inside a couple of new Repco and Ryco and not too impressed)
