If it has iPod connectivity (via USB) it should say in the manual what iPod models are supported. If it just has an AUX input however - then all you need to do is get a patch cable with a headphones plug on each end, any electronics store should have one.

How does the iPod connect to the stereo? If it connects via USB, so long as that iPod model is compatible with the stereo (once again, look at the manual, it should say what models are compatible) it should work fine, and you'll be able to navigate playlists and stuff through the stereo's controls (and steering wheel controls, if you have them). However, if it connects via an AUX input, you won't be able to do this. It will still work fine, you'll still be able to run the iPod through the car stereo, but you won't be able to control the iPod via the stereo.

Bugger!. Thursday night im going to read the book when she takes off the grab the kids. That way hopefully i can find the connections the car has and how compatible they are with the ipod shuffle. And if worst comes to worst i'll keep it..

    Thanks for the helping hand>

It might help if you can post a photo of the headunit. If it has an AUX input, ANY iPod will work with that (as will anything with a headphones jack or line output, even a walkman), however a USB connection will most likely only support certain iPods. (which should be listed in the manual) I have a 4th gen 40GB iPod that is not supported by my headunit (and is not listed under the supported models in the manual) and if I plug it in via USB it recognises it as an unsupported USB device. The AUX input works fine however.

good news it has usb, now in just checking the manual, its also a 4th gen ipod...... In the manual it only says ipod nano 1st to 4th gen. Ipod touch, ipod classic, ipod 5th gen, iphone and 3g. I'm not good with models and things with ipods but if there's no shuffle that rules it out?.

It doesn't say anything about the Shuffle? I'd say it most likely doesn't support it then. It may work, it may not. It won't harm anything to try it, but if its not supported it'll just come up as an unsupported USB device, and you won't be able to play music from it. Does the car also have an AUX input? Because thats most likely going to be your only option, as is the case with my old iPod. (for what its worth, my old 4th gen iPod is a full size iPod, COMPLETELY different to your 4th gen Shuffle and much older, but thats beside the point - if its not listed in the manual as compatible, there's a fairly good chance it'll only work via AUX, not USB)

It might be...what does the text on it say? I can't really read it. Furthermore - if you open that flap what kind of port is behind it?

And no - not all iPods are the same. Like I said I have an old full size 4th gen iPod from 2004/2005. The manual for my Pioneer states that the USB port on it only supports full size iPods from the 5th generation (late 2005/2006) onwards, though I decided to try my 4G anyway and see what happened, and it came up as an unsupported USB device. If I plug it in via the AUX input, it works perfectly (as I said - if the car has an AUX input you can hook up anything with a line out or headphones jack, even a Walkman), but I can't do anything with it via USB.

I'll have to go back and take a closer look and grab the text for you. even with the full size picture i can read it myself. I'll get in get a close look and snap a picture of that open socket also.

Now its got my full attention eyes wide open. I should have come here first before grabbing it but thought, i'm there so - you know lol. When picking the swift up the dealer offered a ipod connection at the time. but we said no as she had the iphone which connects bluetooth. If only i asked questions about these things.
