Car wont start

My new project car died awhile ago and so far all my attempts to get it going again have showed no results at all.
This is what happened just before it died, I tried to start the car awhile ago it turned over slowly wouldn't fire, it was driving around fine not 3minutes before. Tried starting it 3 times then it did nothing at all. Tried jump starting still nothing.

I have tried putting power directly to the starter, when it did nothing I took it out and bench tested it, nothing. After I opened it up and cleaned out more dirt and oil then I thought was possible it would click and engage the lever. I couldn't get it to spin on the bench test but it would engage the gear. I tried a friends starter motor (off a blue motor) that worked and I could get it to do the same but not spin so I figure my starter is fine now.

I put it back in and wired it back up. Turned the key and nothing, not even a click. Battery is fine, leads are brand new (but shouldn't affect it). Doesn't matter if I put it in park or neutral it doesn't seem to make a difference. Fuses all appear to be fine as well.

What else should I try? Or any suggestions. I am beginning to think it may be a fault somewhere between the barrel and the starter, which I am hoping it isn't because that will be a pain to trace and repair.

Have you tried another starter in the car?

Off topic, but, 4 Speed auto behind a 253? What's a tripmatic? If you mean Trimatic, that's the factory 3 speed auto.

Trimatic, yeah thats it soz, and according to the old owner it somehow had an extra gear thrown in it dont ask me how.

As for having the 4sp, once again old owners idea.

The only other starter I have is my mates starter from a blue motor and wont fit (plus he is getting annoyed that I havent returned it yet lol). Though its looking like I may need to try change only the cone part to see if that will work.
