Cool What do you prefer Manual or Automatic transmission?

I was at the Pub the other day with some mates and we got on to the discussion of what kind of transmissions we prefer to drive. I used to drive manual trucks and vans for a living before I got my office job and bought my Commodore back in 2006. Now I've been driving an auto over the past few years I doubt I will ever go back. What about you guys I curious to know?

Well I personally prefer manual, i drove for 2 1/2 years manual and 1 yr auto..

    I'm so over auto lol.

Sure traffic is going to suck, but i hate how you drive with the brake on autos, doesn't know what gear it likes to be in, less fun etc..

But cons of manual i suppose you can't be lazy when you wanna be (like if i go dirt bike riding for 4 days and then have a 4 hour drive back home).

I still prefer manual at the end of the day.

I prefer the Active Select/Manumatic whatever you want to call it transmission. Best of both worlds, with the traffic my Dad and I know encounter on our respective drives to work make manual infeasible.

At days end, he prefers manual and I prefer automatic - however I must say I have never owned nor really driven a manual beyond a few paddy bashers and a couple of runs around town in mates cars.

    Depends what i'm doing.

I drive for a living so for a work car I would prefer a manual as it keeps me stimulated during the day and makes the drive more fun and enjoyable.

If its my weekend cruiser then I would probably go an auto to just kick back and relax.

If its a track or performance car then back to manual again. (unless its the drags, then I would prefer a high stall auto)

Give me a manual any day. Can't stand driving autos i get so bored.
I personally can't understand why People buy ss or clubsports that are auto.
You buy those cars to drive not steer. That's just my opinion tho.

i always prefer a manual. i do not feel like im involved in the driving process in an auto.
it makes me feel like im in more control when driving a manual.
using the gears and not always on the brakes.

if i have a choice i will always get a manual. just because if other people get lazy and do not learn how to drive them. no one (family/friend) but me will be able to drive my car.

only problem with a manual. i keep running out of gears!
if i had 7 gears in my vs it would be perfect for cruising with great fuel economy =P
how about we make the pedals out of sticky rubber and the shoes with steel spikes. at least my shins would like that

The VS would be stupid if it had a 7 speed?

I couldn't imagine a 3.8 or a 5.0 running very well with that many gears that they weren't designed for

Manual Manual Manual, is there even a choice....
You feel like you're actually driving, not just pressing stop and go. In auto I feel like I turn into robot mode, in manual I feel as if I'm enjoying my drive.
For those who say waa waa and have a cry about not being able to drive manual in traffic, grow some balls, it's not really that difficult to do...

hahaha i did that in my brother in laws VS ute, went to move to a 6th gear, there wasn't one lol

but i'd rather the auto on a daily basis, manual its being pushed aside now more for work or leisure.
full on, they did a study about it and shit!

EDIT: i don't have a manual license (shut up lol) but a manual commodore cost faaark loads more than an auto (really why is that?!).
more fun, you feel like your apart of the machine, its more fuel economical and gives you more power, but when you can't be ####ed driving one, (like quite alot of the world) you buy an auto.

which is pretty much what happened to the manual transmission.

ok well i wish i had atleast 6 in the ute.
wish the car would be just above idle at 100-110 kph.
i feel like right now when driving on the freeway im using excessive rpm for no reason.

only reason i would get an auto would be if i was given one for work.
even then the work cars are all manual (well 99% are)

Depends - for around town, auto. Driving a manual in traffic is a pain in the ass.

For country/highway driving however, manual all the way. Much, much more fun than an auto.

Almost all my cars have been manual except my LX hatch which had a fully manualized Turbo 350 and the SV6 that i have now which is the 5 speed auto. I prefer manual but for driving to work and back the Auto is convenient. My next car will be a manual though

Most of you young blokes would prefer a manual. Us older blokes have gotten(mostly) over the gear changing thing, and just want to sit back, and take it easy.
With the manual/autos of today, it makes it a bit of both worlds.

And when you have driven a turbo auto on full boost, then come back and say manuals are the best(not)

Had a 93 camry for a bit it should have been an auto, was so boring even as a manual. But a nice car should be a manual so you can drive it in the way they are supposed to be driven. Flat out. How ever our work ute is an auto and it's brilliant in traffic, i hate the city. It's just an xf falcon so even when it was a 5 speed it wouldn't spin the wheels in the wet.

I had manuals for years, but I can't be stuffed anymore. It stresses me in city traffic.
Maybe it's an age thing but I know some guys older than me who love their manual.

Personally, I'm happy with auto and doubt I'd ever buy a manual again.

Less of them built, more sought after.

    Change your diff ratio

I half agree about the autos in traffic, but it never really bothered me when I was regularly driving a manual. But if forced to choose, I'd take the manual everytime.
My first 5 or 6 cars were all manual. Now I've somehow ended up with all autos. Until I get my Toranas back on the road anyway.

im curious to know, all the people that say that autos bore them, are you just driving around a standard slushbox or have you actually driven a built, stalled and shift kitted auto? because theyre far from boring
