Default Custom Dash Gauge Pod - VIC Legal?

    Hi,

I'm looking for a more visible place to move my 3 gauges that are currently located in the 2nd DIN below my stereo in my VX S S/C. I have seen other people cut a hole in their dash next to their A/C controls for their boost gauge or in their air vents but I'm not willing to lose these. I'm trying to find a solution for Boost/Oil Pressure and something else (EGT or A/F). The biggest issue with the 2nd DIN install that I had was trying to glance at the gauge while engaged in high RPM and still watch the road which meant that I never really monitored the gauge. I'm not willing to lose my air-conditioner vents either..

I know that you are not allowed to have gauges on a-pillar, or crush zone where exactly this is I dont know I assume anywhere I can fit my head, or "above" the centre dash line, but what about something that is similar to below? I can’t really find a straight answer after a few days of searching.

I'm thinking of making a custom fibre housing that will then bolt into where the demister vents are the same bolts that bolt the dash pad in So that I don't have to screw into the dash but still remain secure. Now I don't want to go to all the fabrication effort (sanding) just to find its illegal...

Anyone in VIC got any experience in this area...?

Your not allowed to have them on the pillar? I have had a volts gauge on my pillar since I have had my VS (4 years) and I have been pulled over once, and also have been stopped for a breath test and not once has the cop mentioned anything about my gauge being mounted in the wrong place. Now I have a volts and a boost gauge on the pillar. I only got told off (when I was stopped for a breath test) for driving with my fog lights on which was fair enough (I forgot to turn them off, it was foggy from home to Bacchus Marsh and sunny in Melbourne and forgot I had my lights on).

It's actually illegal (in VIC) to have a GPS in that position since last year. They should be on the pillar side of the steering wheel.

Aslong as its low enough and doesn't obstruct your view it's ok, but the right hand side is preferable. I think it's up to the police officer to decide whether it obstructs your view or not, so try not to piss them off

I understand it, is anything non factory needs to be below the highest point of the dash unless it has some sort of protection included for your head in a the event of a crash.
Be patient, I am inquisitive and I am learning.

Can you mount them on the base of the cluster area? Separate them and possibly fabricate small brackets/stands for them to hold them in position.

Putting them on the pillar will look average unless you make an enclosed case for them so they blend into the fabric.
