Is there any truth in the rumour that the VP commodore memcal has an engine cutout at 220kmh? My racing Gemini uses a VP motor and T5 but still retains its gem diff. She also runs a VP dash so all the pretty lights work. Suffice to say when the VP speedo hits 220kmh (down the straight at lakeside) the engine simply cuts out. (Car is only going about 175kph in reality) Tacho is at 4500 in 5th gear. I have approx 3 seconds of coasting and then the engine comes on again (im nearing the kink at this stage and not watching what the speedo is doing.)
As I understand it the 3.8 Series 2 should spin to 5500rpm stock but is clearly 1k under that when she shuts down.
If there is a speed limit, how do I get around it? (rather hoping for "cut the blue wire" response) Or will it require a reprogrammed memcal.
Cheers
you could get a speedo corrector box from jaycar, that way you will have a correctly reading speedo, and another 45kays up your sleeve.
Great idea WamboDoes anyone know if the VP talks to the ECU before or after the speedo? i.e. where would I splice in the corrector for its 12volt pulse? (i know vn talk speedo to ecu but i think it changed at some stage??) any techos in the room?
All of them have a max rev's cutout which in theory is a speed limiter. Has no direct link to any particular speed though.
Reaper
The only car I've had speed restricted was my V6 manual VY Ute, couldn't crack 171+. would just stop @ 170kph @ like 4k rpm in 4th with 1 more gear to go.
If that's relevant.
I don't recall any of the Delco ECU Commodores having speed limiters......
VN - speed sensor to speedo to ECU. VN had a 'divide by 5' circuitry in the speedo head though that corrected the output to the ECU
I'm fairly sure VP is the same except it doesn't have the divide X5 circuit
I've seen v6 vy's on youtube wind off the clock N/A. Clearly going beyond 240kmh. Need a long road but
My old VP now sold the new owner has already clocked 180+ in it. Insert -> (dick head).

connect it into the purple wire between the speedo sensor in the gearbox and wherever it goes. that way everything sees what it should regardless of how it's setup.
Badda Boom!! Shearer gets the stuffed toy prize! Well done soldier!... theres my gremlin then. thankyou sir.
