    Default installing larger exhaust studs.

Story goes, car had exhaust leak went to replace gasket realised 3 bolts were loose tried to tighten them and they were stripped.
    The head not the studs.

    Questions.
    1. Do i actually need oversized studs ?
    2. They have been replaced before with oversized so if I am not able to go bigger is there other methods ?
    3. When installing them will they cut their own grove or will I need to get out the old tap and die set ?

Engine is a Sr20det and size I was planning to go was 10mm.

    Thanks.

The common way to fix it is with heli coils, a larger thread is cut into the hole and a coil is threaded into it, then a stud can be screwed into that. They won't handle the same torque as the original studs though.

Another way is to do what you originally said and to tap the hole out to suit a larger stud.

You will need to use a tap to cut the new thread then screw the new stud in.

If I were to tap out a larger hole, would I need to first drill it then tap it or will it go straight in ?
I have never done it to alloy and with steel I would drill an appropriate hole first.

It depends on how big the hole is to start with. You can try tapping it first, but I would be drilling it with the correct size drill bit to suit the tap.
