you mean use penrite at 150,000, change oil at 161,000km, wonder why your driveway is black. Oh the car is sludged up! been using it for years and the motors internals still like new

    From another forum....

Re: Engine oil test - from Sc magazine

    ************************************************** ************************************************** **********

Grant, Ive been a user of Penrite for some 15 yrs now & after speaking to someone after a few threads on the SLUDGING of oils I rang to ask what brand was the culprit ! Lets just say I went to the extent of removing my rocer covers to find a great deal of BLACK SLUDGE it had deposited ! Now before any 1 points the finger , my engine has had nothing but Penrite from the day it was built - draw your own conclusion !! I have been changing oil every 5k or less for it's life !

I have now changed to Castrol Edge Sport ! I notice that the oil has not lost it's properties at the changes now ( Penrite always smelt burnt & was like water )

I pulled the Rocker covers off last Thursday morning to find that the lower side of the head is back to a shiny aluminium colour ! Make of it what you will , but after the change you will never see Penrite in any of my engines again !! If I had not seen the effects & the results of the change i'd probably still use it !

    Cheers
    Troy
Not saying the new all synthetic range is bad, just saying what I have read in the past about their range of oils.

You can make up your own mind, for myself... well... until the results of the new range is well documented I would NOT want this stuff in my pride and joy's engine and probably never will.

I was using penrite HPR 15, which is a 15W -60 semi synthetic oil in my reconditioned V6 ecotec engine (after it was initially run in over the first 2000 km on normal mineral oil of course), and Id done around 190,000 km using it, and whenever Ive removed rocker covers or whatever, the engine internals all still look clean and new. I always change the oil and filter every 5000 k's. A while back I had trouble getting hold of the penrite HPR 15 oil , so I changed to buying mobil 1 oil, the 5W-50 full synthetic stuff, Its available at a few different places around here so I dont have to stuff around chasing it up or ordering it in... Ive found that its just as good as the penrite was as far as keeping the engine internals clean goes. My engine gets a very hard time a lot of the time, It gets reved up to the redline daily etc.
I reckon that looking after an engine takes 3 main things, (1) 5000k oil and filter changes using a quality oil. (2) letting the engine COMPLETELY reach its full operating temperature after its its first started from cold, as loading up or reving a cold engine hard is not good if you want a long life from it. And lastly, using quality engine coolant, mixed at the right ratio with distilled/demineralised water, and changing it every summer and winter.
Ive found that sludge buildup can be caused from a few different things. Idling the engine around all the time and not reving it up through its rev range can cause sludge buildup. Making short trips around town where the engine doesnt get up to full temperature very often can also cause sludge to form. Also not regularly changing the oil and filter will cause it of course. And lastly, using cheap crappy 91 octane fuels can cause sludge buildup as these cheaper fuels dont burn as cleanly as the better fuels with a higher octane rating etc, so they leave a lot of crap behind that the oil has to to pick up and remove,(the job that the detergents do).
