petrol
diesel
i am buying a work ute, something more then likely 90's and ive always thought deisel was more expensive then petrol, so i havnt looked at any diesel utes, when i say expensive i dont just mean at the bowser, i thought they were alot more thirstier aswell,
but if it works out to be roughly the same then i'll start looking at dirty diesels to
cheers
I Think Its much and much, Depending on what your doing, if your doing more farm work and towing, id go for a diesel, but if its just for moving say car parts from A to B, prolly the petrol. Had 2 FJ45 Land Cruisers on the farm, 1 petrol and 1 diesel, much and much, both handled the tough work fine. The Petrol was easier to start, the diesel required start ya bastard spray in the intake lol
depends what your doing

4x4 or 2wd?
Are you towing?
Turbo Diesel for work, towing, etc.
sorry i should have added, it will very rarely be for towing, only need it to carry some tools, and a toolbox, im not fussed on which one i get, aslong as the cost is pretty much the same, i wouldnt ever have much of a load on, maybe a standard toolbox and some shovels and shit, so i definatly dont need a diesel cause a petrol would do it fine, but i havent found any petrol ones yet and like i said i didnt bother looking to diesels, it only needs to be a 2wd aswell,
im looking at something like a navara, triton or courier, only an older work ute that gets me to work and back, can chuck shit on the back and not worry to much about
Hilux workmates are good for that, but they run off the smell of a 44 gallon drum.
diesels are junk (light vehicles)
pros - usually use less fuel than equivalent petrol engine
cons - gutless, noisy, dirty, expensive to repair and diesel fuel is more expensive than petrol these days.
I would go for an mid ninties Holden rodeo or Isuzu space cab, I had a space cab 2.6L Petrol. was a good ute, really tuff. I spun out and hit a crash barrier at low speed. barrier came off second best!
Just be prepard to use more gas than a v6 commy and less pick up than a 2L car.
For long driving or heavy loads a diesil is slighty better. They are slighty cheaper to run (more k's per litre) but they need sevicing every 5000 k's not 10 like a petrol. diesil oil is slighty dearer to. if your doing shorter drives a petrol is better.
Cheers for all the opinions, it's only pretty short driving , 80 kays a day would be the most I do, Im driving the vr atm and its not that great on fuel, I thought 4cyl utes would use less lol. And exactly I don't need a rocket ship, I know diesels are a bit less powerful in most cases but that doesn't worry me
If its going to be used like a car, ie short trips with lots of stop starting then I would go for a petrol.
Older diesels want to work once there up and running.
Or you could get a little hatch back and fold the rear seats down, cheap on gas and plenty of room.
my mum drives a mazda bravo 2.6 dual fuel she does over 200-300km a day on 20$ worth of gas, she works for jet couriers, its gutless with 1 tonne on it so shes upgrading to a diesel, diesel will use less fuel every time as they work at lower revs, their not gutless whoever says that obviously doesnt know much about them, the new amarok would put a vn ss to shame and its diesel, it depends what car your buying, a diesel hilux will be gutless, but who buys a hilux to go fast?
anyways, to the point, diesel is very good for towing heavy loads and long drives, short drives, basiclly all round, the extra 10-15 cents you pay for diesel you save by using less as it is economical, but if you want something that will be abit more zippy get a petrol, but once you put abit of weight on the petrol engine you will feel it, while a diesel will carry a tonne without a problem. me personally, i wouldnt care how fast my work car is unless it was extremely slow, like....barely able to reach 100. but seeing you wont be loaded heavily unless you buy a 1980s rodeo you wont have that problem haha.
my mate has a rodeo 3.0 v6 and it would put a commodore to shame. your choice, both have their pros and cons just pick one that suits you.
exactly mate, im not worried about how fast it goes, nor do i care, its a work ute for a reason, work. theres a toy for the weekends, and im not really looking to buy a amaraok, just slightly outta my budget ahah, but yeah, the thing i have noticed with diesels, most of them you cant tell when its empty and has a bit of gear on it, compared to a petrol anyways, petrol are good empty but are slugs when loaded, im not to fussed with what i buy then, the only reason i didnt want a diesel is cause i thought they where more exxy then petrol ones, but thats been cleared so cheers
