Default Any advice for a new VT reco engine?!

    Hi guys,

Firstly, I don't know alot about cars under the hood, so any help is greatly appreciated.

I have a VT which has done 300,000 Kms and the engine died on me the other day. Finally came to a ticking and hissing hault and got it towed to the mechanics. Mechanic said a hose had blown off and the engine was as dry as anything and was seized.

So I need a new engine.

Do I get a reco engine? I haven't got a clue where to start looking. Do mechanics do that for you or is there somewhere I can go that will help me find one?
I live in Berwick, so anywhere in Melbourne would be best.

And what would be rough price for a reco engine and labour?

Any advice about anything I have said would help me a great deal.

    Thanks in advance!
    Jon

Mate seriously id look for a vx engine with lowish km's might set you back 800-1000. Better than 2500 plus for a reco engine.

You can get a 2nd handy for around $400 if you look around. Shouldn't be too hard to put in and out either. They have alot of room in the engine bay, should be a day to change over.

better to source it yourself - mechanics will just add more to it so they can get something out of it

Also wreckers have to give some form of warranty (not much but enough)if you buy through one

most wreckers will give you the engine with a 3 month warranty... some will also install as well

Bloke at work got a buick from a wreckers and installed in his vr for $600 so ecotec will cost a bit more but shouldnt be too expensive
