Hey want people's opinions of what I should choose over the two.
I recently put my VY SS into a gutter and wrote it off and paid out $22k for it, I want to spend around $17k and had a look at two options.....
1. Black VY SS stock standard, black leather with a LS2 converted into it and full exhaust, HSV brakes with a dyno sheet of 280 at the wheels.
2. VZ SS stock 5.7ltr, black leather, sunroof, full exhaust and big HSV brakes.
I really want a change and go for a VZ SS because I like the look of a VZ over a VY, headlights, tail lights etc...
But the VY has a LS2 in it. So hard to choose. What's your opinions?
I'd go the VZ purely because it'd be newer. LS2's aren't that crash hot.
How so? I thought the LS2 were much better than the LS1 and L76??
depends what you do - stock for stock the LS2 is better with just a tune - the L76 and L98 are far better if you start playing with cams as their heads flow considerably better.
Great point mate, i will look into it further. I dont mind a VZ SS actually plus the bonus option of it being newer.
Yeah either way you're going to be happy - Provided you don't race the car or go for massive power you're not really going to notice much difference between the two. Good luck!
The VZ has a sunroof... most people look for them for you might want to be quick if your going VZ
Dont worry about looks for now, for performance wise its better to go a 5.7 over a 6L??? I wont be doing no big power mods but the usual bolt ons only.
The VY has obviously had more work done to it, as fun as the 280KW is going to be, do you know who did the work? I although I and many others in this fourm drive SS's with some considerable engine work, I would not buy one if I didnt know the quality of the work. If its a back yard job or even a mechanic who doesnt have a good reputation or the right skillsets, the extra work could be the biggest trouble the car has, and cost you more dollars in future repairs.
The VZ is a much cleaner starting slate. (plus sunroof = sextastic) If you want the bigger power load, you will have a ball seeing the VZ grow and perform better as you mod it anyway.
That being said, if the VY had its work done at a reputable workshop (say, Chevs performance centre) it could be worth the dough.
Research first.
Sorry to hear about the old SS, its hard losing a loved one.
Well the bloke who is selling the VY is a mechanic himself and has his own shop, I do notice he did tell me after he had transplanted the LS2 in there he went away on leave for a couple months and came back and had to replace the starter and radiator. So basically he does the work himself.
Its better than a backyard mechanic but without further info you dont know that he is a good mechanic, I have seen plenty of engines build by mechanics fail. Sometimes just wear and tear or because the owner wanted something the mechanic advised against. But sometimes because the mechanic himself made the wrong choice, or underestimated the required HD parts for the power output.
Maybe do a google search on his business and look for reviews. Or ask the guys over at Australian LS1 and Holden Forums if anyone had used this bloke for one of their builds. At least with some more information on the mechanic/business you could purchase with the confidence that it isnt going to shit itself the first time you rev past 2.5k.
I still like the sound of the VZ though, great look, specially with the sunroof, if I hadnt done so much work to the VX I would be keen to trade on one, but at this point I dont want to start a fresh build.
Personally i would get the VY.. The 6L being the deal maker.. But the VZ definently has its upsides and would give you something a tad different..
My VY SS: 20s, Tint, Leather, DVD player, OTR, Cammed 290rwkw
I found out a bit more info about the VY man, he owns Powerhouse Automotive Service in North Manly if anybody knows of that mechanic would be great to hear some feedback???
I cant find any info about them in the LS1 forums, but the guys there really do stick to the best of the best, guys that have been around for the long term and made a name for themselves. A google search also doesnt bring up any of his work or builds.
The fact that he calls his business powerhouse automotive tells me he is at the very least a performance mechanic, not you general service repair kind of mechanic. So he should have more knowledge than most. Nothing to say he is a bad mechanic, he may be new on the scene. If he is worth his salt, he will be able to give you all specs on that engine, major concerns would be if its had a cam thrown in, or anything that change it from stock. if its a stock LS2 with bolt ons, (not likely due to it being a performance mechanics car, I mean I would cam it and do some headwork before throwing it in there) then it should be no drama, as long as he is happy to fix (free of charge) any issues that arise due to the conversion.
Fact is the LS2 would be a world of fun, and if you want to keep the power growing, it's a great start. Just make sure your comfortable that your getting a reliable well build car that wont cost you in repairs.
Yes well that's correct mate, there is no modifications done the engine, he did advise that it was a brand new crate engine he purchased from Holden that has now done 20k.
Only mods he has is extractors and an exhaust, he seems like a reliable kind of guy. But best thing to do is go visit him at his shop and check it out further. Take it for a run and see how she goes. Thanks for the help.
Got to be tempted then if its stock internals.
guessing it has an OTR also? dyno must have been a little happy for 280 though, I would have expected 250ish. (but Ive never worked on one, only LS1s) if you really want to check his honesty ask if you can take it for a spin on someone elses dyno.
It is sounding better and better though. Hope it works out well for you.
No otr on it besides an exhaust but don't know how he got 280.
He said he will give me the car for a day before I buy it. So that gives me a chance to take it to a performance mechanic with a dyno and see it goes.
280rwkw without even an OTR? Sounds very suss to me.
Ok, 280 is inflated then, but he will come back at you with the excuse that all dynos are different and his was happy on the day. That doesnt neccessarily make it a bad thing, or mean he is full of shit. As long as it still has respectable power (240+) it is possible that it was a happy dyno. (I've seen bigger gaps between dynos, my SS read 205rwkw once, and at a dyno day the next week it read 245 on a different dyno, thankfully now its a touch higher again)
If he gives you the car for a day, make sure you are polite, dont make accusations of inflated power. Offer to leave your licence number, phone number and address. Politeness will go a long way if you do buy it, you will have an immediate contact that can fix any possible issues (hopefully free since he sold you the car) can do more performance work if you wish, even basic services. Plus the bloke should know the car inside and out, who better to do it all.
I would buy the latest model with the lowest Kay's, that you can afford, thats my rule of thumb. Modifications don't come into it as far as I'm concerned.
280 without an OTR? WTF?
I'd seriously consider the VZ. Newer, and as previously stated, when you modify it later down the track at least you will know it is done right.
....My Impulse VZ SS....
Both auto.
You should maybe shop around and find a manual.
Unless you're really keen on either of the cars, or really want the auto.
....My Impulse VZ SS....
I'd go the VZ myself. I just don't trust anybody else to mod a car I own.
