Ease up guys I don't lock my car up in my town, but to be fair I live in the middle of no where.

I think it's about location, also, no one will steal my VT...

you would be suprised by the amount of tradies leave their keys in their utes, not neccasarily in the ignition but in the centre console on the dash etc. you just dont expect it to happen

At the end of the day, he was unlucky, we've all left our cars unlocked at some time. I'd never leave mine unlocked in Penrith or somewhere though, you're lucky if your car doesn't get set on fire in that town.

When I used to live out at Longreach I would often leave my car unlocked, and with the windows down while I'd duck into the shops, purely because I knew that nobody would touch it. Even so, I still took the keys with me. However when I moved back to Bundaberg I became very vigilant about locking the car every time I park it. Even at home when it was just parked out the front. And when I get my car down to Sydney, same deal as Bundaberg.

    Lesson learnt

What's the insurance like? Are they coming to the party?

I have heard, grapevine comments, that if keys left in car and its stolen that insurance may not pay up hence reason i asked.

    This true?

Big mistake. Even if you took the keys with you, you should always lock the car.

People have asked me a number of times, why do I lock my car when i'm a a servo filling up with fuel. In my head I am saying "because i'm not a retard". But the reason is because I don't want some random going through my car when I go to pay for the fuel, or worse stealing it.

I plan on getting GPS trackers for both my VS and WH one day, just need to get a few more jobs done on the cars first.

Accidents happen but if it is a habit then you need to change it as you've found out there are low life's that will take any chance to make some money for the drug habit.
Good luck mate as mentioned before hit the cash converters and so on it will hopefully give you a lead to find your car even though it would have been flog two ways from Sunday by now.

This is the reason I have a bloody good alarm on my Hiace. It's so friggin' sensitive it has gone off when a cat jumps on it at night.

i do this too! people often give me strange looks when i check that it's locked. (look at both locks and try the drivers handle)

One time at about 11pm i just finished filling up and i locked the car as usual, i look over the roof to see who is around, and i see a car full of aboriginals at the next pump laughing at me in a pos vr wagon.
I felt like a bit of a tool, but then i remembered that i have nice things, and i like to keep them in my possession.

Mate, I even lock my car in my locked garage which is behind locked gates at night. Paranoid? Absolutely.

Your not the first and you wont be the last. My brother and his crew always had their cars unlocked at their work-sites. One was even used for entertainment music-news throughout the day.

Yeah I don't want to risk it. I automatically take my keys out and lock the car each time I get out of it because i'm so used to it. And like showbags said, I also lock both my cars in a locked garage which is behind locked gates. I couldn't care less of what people think of me for doing it, but I like my cars and I would prefer that nothing happened to them haha. They are insured, but if I never get the car back, I will only get the market value, which means I have lost all the money spent on all the mods.

Hi all, sorry again for not replying earlier,

You are all 100% correct. Don't risk it anywhere lock it up at all times! Yes I have found out the hardest way and it Fu#@ing sucks! My mentality with my cars is to lock it up everywhere as i do, however justan example say you were parked in your private property driveway and maybe washing/cleaning the inside of the car you cant tell me you wouldn't have it open. You walk inside for like 1 min to get somethingand then its gone, so this is what I have come to realize just dont trust any prick!

Now on Tuesday at about 3pm these dumbass low life scum of the earth where caught and arrested. The cops finished off the job but it was my best mate scott who spotted the car on Frankston Fwy then
followed and kept up with them all the way to reserve rd Cheltenham (about 20km or so). So obviously he was on the phone to 000 while driving and then the cops where able to pull them over and make the
    arrest.

Fortunately the insurance (AAMI) are covering me. The car is at their assessment center atm and I went yesterday to go over it with them. Let me tell you these thieving pricks know how kick a bloke when
hes down. The car is fairly trashed including dents and scratches over every panel, changed tyres Fu@#ed rims, engine is running rough as, clutch feels stuffed, they even pinched me engine cover spare wheel and wheel changing kit. I have to wait and see what their mechanical assessment says for the final out come, at the moment the assessor said its 50/50 whether or not its a write-off.

I think you owe your mate a few cases!
At least it's in one piece, hopefully you get it back and it gets repaired properly. Maybe it's just me, but if someone nicked my car, I'd fix her up with the respect she deserves.
Yes I have an unhealthy attachment to my car :P

Anyway mate, best of luck with everything.
