hell, its still a great looking beast
that things got a dash out of a jet fighter
is it just me or does it have two tape decks? also interestign in the way the wheel lifts up with the "door" to make it eaiser to get out.
attn Über geeks, i play Second life. Patrio Graysmark.
Man, they could build that thing today with only a minor upgrade in interior styling and they'd sell shiteloads. Unfortunately only one was ever made...
I have the specs right here in front of me, and what a car! I mean, oil cooled multi-plate front discs, mid engined layout, rear-view TV, the lot!
Going by the pictures, the right hand side unit is an old-style push button AM radio, and over on the passenger side is an 8-track stereo...in the original specs, it said the stereo was a (gasp!) "automatic station-seeking radio"!!! Wonder of wonders! But big news back then I suppose.
It had some very interesting features that a lot of modern cars don't even get...such as two-level taillight brightness, "day bright and night anti-dazzle", and a reversing camera with screen in the dash...of course, the camera shown in the line drawings is the size of a couple of house bricks...no lipstick sized CCD cams back then..... It had a system whereby the engine would not start unless the canopy was locked down and the drivers seat belt was buckled as well.
Oh, and has anyone noticed in the latest Holden TV advert about "employee pricing for everyone", that there is a white Holden GTR-X sitting on the showroom floor behind a new Commodore?
They were heaps closer to production than the Hurricane ever was. There were only three built, but they used all standard Torana GTR running gear front to back, and also used a lot of other "standard" items from the parts bin.
How many of them would Holden have sold? It was all costed, the limited edition "Holden Collection" book has a reprint of what looks like the engineering proposal for it, saying what kind of wiring it will use, and other standard bits and pieces, and how the body is constructed.
It would have been a small, light, well-handling car...imagine one with a lightweight V6 Alloytec 190 and six speed manual under the hood! (and please don't just take the American philosophy of "jam a V8 in it...that must make it better!"...)
Sorry for the crap quality scan with the big fold in the middle...
Interestingly, the one in the Holden advert is white, just like this one. There is also a silver one I have seen on TV at a big Holden day, and there is one in a museum somewhere. If I could have been arsed, I could have searched the net for a better photo of the car I suppose....![]()
So yeah, Holden could forget about any plans to bring in the Corvette, and build our own muscle car right here, using the old Hurricane and GTR-X as a base...ahh, wishful thinking I suppose.....but then again, it's probably just my brain...I still wonder how many cars they could sell that looked just like an EH Holden but following the resto-rod crowd with an old body style but with modern running gear and electrics in them....![]()
