Australian coppers are too lenient?! my arse! Here if you get fined for doing 1-5mph over the limit the judge WILL throw it out of court. So, you don't get fined for it. You only start getting fined when you are court doing 15mph over the limit! Lenient my arse.

Yeah Mate, sorry that was a while back wasn't it. This thread is moving very quickly... Mate How you get to Hay is up to you, I have no idea what is the best way to get here, ut from here on it really depends on where excatly in sydney you are going.

If you are going to the city itself then I would just go straight through from Haqy to Narrandera, then on to Wagga and through to the Hume. That takes you straight up to Sydney. And stay on the Express way, I mean you have to pay a toll but the new tolls way (M5 I think) saves a lot of time...

If you were going to Penrith or the Far Western Suburbs, I'd divert to the mid western Hwy at Hay, which goes up the West Wyalong, keep going to Bathurst and the Get on the Great Western Hwy which takes you over the divide through Katoomba bringing you down at Penrith, the you can pan out to where ever. I think this option is a nicer drive regardless of where you are going in Sydney though.

I speak to those as to how they speak to me. If I'm the first to talk, I'll always be polite. The minute I detect a bit of attitude it's hello Mr Bad Cop.

Chick cops (generalisation) have more to prove than male cops - in their mind- , and don't want to give any leeway to have themselves look incompetant. That's my opinion. Only bad instances I've had with police have been female. One male too, but that won't count. But I'm very polite to police and find they have let me off with ALOT more than I should have deserved. It's only within the last 2 years I've developed respect for the police as I've realised that alot of them really are ok people, as long as you show them the same respect.

I've been let off heaps of times for stuff like my red neons under the front of my car spotted by the police, or came round the corner pretty quick and they just looked at me and Stereo just pumping and they came round the corner slowed down waived his finger at me like "naughty naughty" and then they booted off.

Its the traffic managment division that give me the most hassels especially in my old car (lowered torana), we got this one bloke at our cop shop and he's a real cowboy, he drives a black SS

Not bragging or anything, but back on the neons thing:
I was pulled over in the heart of Perth 2 days before Christmas at about 11.30PM after a couple of drinks with some mates at the Carnegie Tavern.
Cops pulled me over with a drunk mate in the passenger seat and his sober-enough-to-drive girlfriend in the back seat. I was pulled over for four separate traffic offences, and I want to make it clear that I'm not proud of this, but that's not the point. I had the stereo raging with my arm out the window, blue neons inside the car, blue interior light, loud exhaust etc...
I blew exactly 0.02 (limit for me since I'm on P-plates) and treated the 2 police officers present with respect - even the one I thought was a wanker for grabbing me by the arm and forcing me to the back of the car. . .
Since I treated them with respect and didn't put up sh!tty excuses for my actions, and agreed to let my mate's girlfriend to drive the car back to their place, I was simply cautioned.
My mate on the other hand gave an officer a bit of cheek (just in fun since he was drunk, but still...) and he was instantly fined $50 for having his arm out the window.

The police didn't say a thing about the neons (I don't have any under the car) although they thoroughly checked the car (cabin, boot, glove-box, under the bonnet, tyres) and decibel tested the exhaust.

I guess the moral of the story is if you're nice to the police and respect them, then odds are they'll be nice to you.

I've since been told that it is illegal for a police officer to lay a hand on you unless you're under arrest.

    My 2c worth.

They'd never be able to do that now.. It would hit the fan if something happened to you on the way back..

That aside, I seriously can't see that happening anymore..

Ha Ha Ha, thats the funniest thing I ever heard...

Police can use reasonable force to enact any power under current legislation or to effect the carriage of their duties.

Besides, the dude that got pulled from the car and walked to the back by the cops was technically under arrest (its referred to as implied arrest)

Lots of people get confused with arrest and charge, they are two completely different things. You can be placed under arrest and not charged, in lots of scenarios.

But you are right, police can't search a vehicle for the sake of it, some suspicion has to arise, unless it's a designated spot eg. The NSW & SA border when it was suspected drugs were being transported in vehicles along this road, police had the power to stop and search any vehicle.

Once police have established enough cause, they can search the vehicle until they are satisfied are thorough search has been conducted.

Helly may be able to expand on this for you.
Yes, in some places within NSW and SA their are joint operations which target the movement of drugs accross state borders, the last of which was called operation 'Carting', creative Huh!

These powers are inacted from time to time, where police police can just pull up any vehicle and search it for drugs, just like RBT! Howver Carting is 'Dead and Buried', but that doesn't mean there isn't another such operation in force right now.........

But generally I just ask people if they would consent to a search. you'd be very suprised how many people just say yeah go ahead officer, and forget that they have a kilo of ecstacy in the car...
