Default Question bout Holden Kingswood UTE

I know this is a commodore forum, however I must admit lots of Holden fans here who generally like Holdens of any model.

Now I have a problem with my holden kingwood ute (HJ 1979)

When we first got it, the brakes were kickass.
But recently, all of a sudden it failed, and we had to push all the way in to get the car to stop.
Then it goes back to normal.

This happened a couple of times.

And now its bad in general, it makes a big hissing sound when we press the brakes, kind of like when you are releasing gas from a stove.
It also takes a while to stop as the brakes dont catch on very well.

Just wondering what the sound may be, and if there may be another problem, apart from getting new brakepads?

Thanks

ok well for one your slave cylinders in your brakes are rooted....they are obviously semi ceased so i would get right onto that....your booster (if it has one) could have a leak and loses pressure therefor losing brake pedal pressure..... maybe you need to change your brake fluid and adjust your drums..... drums shuld be adjusted every 3 months to keep them in good working order because they wear and the parts can sometimes fatigue

Thanks heaps for the reply.
Do you know roughly how much that would cost?

ps. The gas noise started a while back, but was really mild, then grew heavier and heavier.
And now its loud.

Problem is, on low budget, so will have to see pricing

Thanks

slave cylinders are bout $70 for a pair so if you know anything about drum brakes give it a go but dont even attempt it if u have no clue cos you will most likely end up having no brakes

Yeah those master cyclinders are buggers to replace when your trying to put the brake shoe's back on them cause if you get it wrong they **** fluid.

I would go for brand new master cyclinder and booster cause it's very difficult to find secounds for your ute that look trusting to use.

I bet my balls these guys are right. it is the master cylinder.

Always be careful what you pick up from the wreckers too, you don't wanna end up with **** brakes at a critical time. Buy a new one!

Booster is the Hissing, will need another one, and the falling pedal will be Master cylinder. You can get the master re-sleeved or exchange it for a re-sleeved one. I THINK that you could get an exchange re-built booster as well.
Just buying from a wrecker is risky as Kingswoods are all very old now. But you've been told that already
