Default Best way to remove stuck on oil filters

Just doing another oil change and one tool has never failed for me..

Often, I've jammed screwdrivers through the filter and other metal objects and had no luck.. Sometimes that just won't do it.. Especially on smaller 4 cylinder cars where you have no room to move.. It's useless, often..

The chain filter removed.. It just fits on the end of a ratchet or wrench and can remove anything..

In other situations the mainstream filter removers just keep slipping.. With this, you can just keep making it tighter til it rips off the filter..

Just thought I'd share with you..

Any comments or anything?

To heck with the metal band removers, not worth the stainless they're made of.
From what I've seen a good strap filter remover works best [ a rubber one or metal one simply slips while the fabric straps will absorb some loose oil or crap and help grip the filter as you go to unbolt it though I think the hard part there is making sure that you have the proper angle and tension for the most "turning circle" else by the time its taut your at the end of your rope so to speak.

I thought I had the easiest way a few years back. For $10 I bought a set of four tin sockets that had a hole for a 1/4 inch socket drive in the top. Worked brilliantly on car filters of all sizes (hence the four) until the manufacturers reverted to the completely round filters again. Now I use anything at hand, including my hands.
My brother has a chain ratchet and swears by it.

just get yourself a strap (preferably flat.. a tie down works well) and wrap it around it anticlockwise a few times then just pull the strap up hard and it will spin the filter off

make sure that the strap wraps around itself for it to grip

if an oil filter isn't over tightened, you should near on be able to remove it with your hands. i use a metal strap filter wrench and i have never had a problem with it on any of my cars.

Yeah I've used nothing but my hands. Not sure what to use if the above recommendations don't work, apart from a good clean up with some degreaser and then maybe something to get you some added grip.

We've got a corrolla, tell me about it.. It's a bitch and a half..

But seriously.. I can't believe so many people do it by hand.. On my Commo, I've done it by hand twice.. But good luck trying to undo the filter by hand on our Corrolla..

It's the hardest goddamn thing to undo.. Even a screwdriver can't do it.. No bull****..

Never had trouble with 4 cylinder filters (I just use my hands and turn) but I've never had one that's so tightly put in. With the bigger filters I use filter wrench and that seems to do the trick. Just need to position yourself in a spot where you get the most amount of room.

Go down to Supercheap (or whatever is near you) and look for a filter removal tool that is two movable metal plates linked via a shaft with a 1/2" drive socket in the middle. I forgot the name of the tool.

Basically the two metal plates fit onto the flat bits of the filter at the end. You then tighen it into place and attach your rachet. Undo as a bolt.

They are a Godsend on a RB Skyline or SR20 Pulsar
