Gonna do up an engine
OK, I'm in yr 12, and in Automotive I have to rebuild an engine. I want to do a Holden engine, with a budget of around $150 for the engine and about $400 to do it up. I'm looking at just getting the engine started, would I need a gearbox? I'll be mounting it on an engine stand and it'll probably stay like that until I either sell it or put it in a car. I was thinking mabye a VN engine, and I've been quoted $150 all up. Or a VK 202 motor, carby.
What's your sugguestions?

The problem with a vn motor is it needs the computer and all that to run. so unless they got a good setup there you probably wont be able to start it. Personally i go with the 202 they're easy, cheap and people will buy them. I think going the blue motor will be easier cause the black 202 run an est unit or efi. You can put the blue into any commodore from vb's to vk's so if you keep it or sell it there's more options. If it doesnt need to be started For you to pass your class I'd do a black Efi or maybe a vn. If you can find a v8 do one of them but parts for a v8 or vn v6 will be more expensive than a 202

A rotary then !!!.... That would be something different to the usual 4 strokes...
Or do a two stroke bike motor...that would be the cheapest option... then weld yourself up a go-cart....

Holden Starfire 4.... fitted to late model Torana's & early Commodores...
I think they shared similar parts to Holden sixes....
You'd get one of those cheap enough...

What are you planning on doing to it for 400 dollars? Maybe some minor minor machine work, some leads and some degreaser and a few little replacements?

you could do quite a few things without money...as long as you have the right tools.
a good way to make an engine run better and perform real nice is to completely de-bur all fabrication dodgyness due to the mass manufacture of the engine at the factory.
so basically go over the entire block with a die grinder and polish it up real nice and smooth.
you can also "rough up" the cylinder heads a bit in a criss cross pattern so its hard for mixture to stick to the sides allowing freedom of movement.
but yeah...lots more stuff you can do with the right tools and some hard work.
