If you are going to use it for more than changing tyres it's worth getting one of the better units. A good brand for not too much money is Armstrong. I have a Simplex but its 25 years old now. They are normally wider (Track and contact point), have more lift height and a common lift and lower control on the handle. The larger rated jacks are quite a bit safer to use if the ground is not 100% underneath as well. The cheap trolley jacks normally bend/twist if any side load is applied.
If you buy a good quality one you probably never wear it out and it should last a lifetime.
I used to carry a cheapy as I couldn't get the stocky under my lowered car with a flat tyre but if at home I always used the big unit. A decent unit will probably cost twice the amount of a EL CHEAPO. For pure home use go a 2-2.5 tonne unit. For the boot never less than 1500kg rating and keep something to use underneath it just incase you happen to get stuck on soft ground.
Cheers
Daza

Trolley if your going to be using it a bit.

I had a el cheapo from supercrap give way on me whilst under a AU, and it was a 2.5tonne jack.

My advice is go for anything not made in China. Armstrong or Ajax are awesome. It ended up that after the return of the supercrap (which it turned out was a recall, thanks for telling me ) I had enough for a Aussie made Armstrong.

Oh and a lession..
ALWAYS ALWAYS USE CHASSIS STANDS.
