thats a pretty easy question...the vs calais for sure.
calais parts are dear??...what parts are you talking about?
most mechanical parts are the same across the board (generally, there are some exceptions)..

you should really compare holden parts to a honda parts... now thats dear... or any other import for that matter... but comparing holden vn to vs calais parts? please...

Only reason calais parts would be more dear is if you ripped the seat... leather vs cloth... but that's just logic at work anyway.

As far as mech parts go, it's gonna be near identical.

Go with a VS Series II Calais. Engines ... well you have a choice of the Ecotec V6, Supercharged V6 and the V8 with the Calais. If your mum is worried about the price of fuel, go with the V6 or Supercharged V6. If not, then go with the V8. Either way, it will be a big improvement over the VN. Just make sure that all the things in the Calais are working like power windows, climate control, cruise control or trip computer. Anything mechanical isn't expensive.

Good luck
