Default Check out the RC Nitro Cars !!

Hey everyone, look what I found:

http://www.holden.com.au/www-holden/...?categoryID=11

A VY SS remote control nitro car! This looks unreal. My bro and his friend just got one each (not Commodores) and they're the best fun!!

Ive been looking at buying one since they got theirs and now I think Im gonna get this one. Does anyone else have one? Any good? Wanna race?

Id appreciate some comments from anyone else who has a nitro car on what to look for and if they reckon this one would be any good.

Oh yeah, and check this one out - the best drifting Ive ever seen in miniature nitro cars:

http://www.wimp.com/rcdrifting/

Is that sick or what? That'll be me soon......

The only time i've seen RCs drifted is when the wheels are replaced with "drift" ones with hard plastic tires...

Default Rc Cars Are Fun

I have 2 nitro RC cars one is 1/10th scale which I have the VY ss shell for also a subaru wrc shell, nissan skyline gtr and mazda 6, and the other is a 1/8th scale inferno mp7.5 sports (off road buggy)

the 1/10th scale cost me $400
and the inferno cost me $900
if your looking to buy one, just be aware of the additional cost in them as most hobby stores don't tell you until you get home and realise you need more stuff
for example nitro cars require the use of a glow plug ( usually supplied with the car ) and they cost around the $8 mark each.
you will also need a glow plug heater and battery/or charger ( not usually supplied with the car ) at around $30
also you will need a glow plug spanner/wheel nut spanner these look like a car wheel brace and have 4 different size ends so they will fit glow plug/wheel nuts etc ( these are sometimes supplied with the car)
you will require fuel obviously @ about $15 per litre for 15% nitro methane, 1 litre will last quite a while ( DON'T RUN THE FUEL IN YOUR COMMODORE, ALTHOUGH IT MIGHT BE A GOOD POWER BOOST LOL) 16% nitro methane is the regulation fuel mixture for competing.
you will need a fuel filler bottle.
and if you want a different shell, the majority of these come clear and not cut to shape, so to cut them I use an electric rotary tool ( dremel ) with small drum sander. Then to make them look nice you will need an air brush, or someone with one, and the knowledge of how to paint them, (PAINTING A SHELL IS A HOBBY OF ITS OWN) just because you can paint a car dont think it will be easy to paint a nitro RC car shell, ( I HAVE DONE BOTH) there is alot of prep, masking designs and the way of painting, it is the opposite to painting a real car, as you paint the inside of the shell, and you must start with the TOP COAT FIRST then work in layers (colours) down to the FINAL COAT UNDERCOAT, for example, if you want a PEARL effect you must spray this on first for the RC shell, but for a real car the pearl would be the last coat, other than the clear ( the RC car shell acts as the clear coat)
also buy a bottle of after run oil, and put 2-3 drops in the carby, and remove the glow plug and put 2-3 drops in the combustion camber and slowly pull the starter to distribute the oil then replace the glow plug, the reason for after run oil is to stop the internals of the engine from rusting, as nitro attracts moisture, like methylated spirits does ( the reason we put metho in our commodores when we think we might have got water in the fuel after some rain, or from a bad servo)
other than that you will need a basic understanding of the 2 stroke engine
eg tuning and fuel mixtures, as you need to adjust these regularly.
ONE IMPORTANT NOTE, NEVER NEVER RUN YOUR RC CAR IF YOU CAN'T SEE SMOKE FROM THE EXHAUST PIPE (known as stinger) you will quickly destroy it
the required fuel mixture needs to be adjusted according to temperature / humidity / altitude etc, all of these things change the way an engine performs
different engines have different setup carbys, for example my 1/10th has only 1 mixture screw and 1 idle screw.
The 1/8th scale off road, has a high speed mixture screw and a low speed mixture screw and 1 idle screw.
also nitro cars become very dirty due to the oil from the exhaust, and dust sticks to it, I found the easiest way to quicly clean them is to spray them down with WD40 or similar and then blow them off with an air compressor,
the more complex way is to pull the car apart.
I suppose I could write on this subject for hours, but I will leave it there.
hope this helped anyone
and didn't overwhelm you all
its not all that much work once you get used to it all, the first off cost of buying a car can be overwhelming, but they are fun.
I would reccomend getting one to anyone who thinks they will enjoy it
post any questions here and I will be more than happy to answer them if I can
if anyone feels I have given innacurate information please correct me

Thumbs up

Wow, thanx for the info VL-VP-VT !

My bro got a 1/8 scale off-road buggy (probably very similar to yours) as a ready-made kit for $600 and it included all the extras you mentioned. I dunno if the VY SS would have all that though (knowing Holden merchandise - probably not!)

His mate has a 1/10 scale something or other with a BMW M3 shell on it and its sooooo quick !! I think I want one like his mate's. Even though you have to pick & choose where you take it, I just love the speed and the drifts!

Would it be possible to buy a kit like my bro's and just buy a VY SS shell separate? Are there any around? I don't really wanna make / paint the shell though - its not really my thing...

This is a bit of a sneaky post just to get this thread back up to near the top of the list so more people will see it and hopefully answer my questions.

VL-VP-VT are you still out there?

Pretty trick very fast toys...
I showed my young bloke the video the other night,
& he didn't show much interest,as he was thinking
so what more drifting..Until the pocket rocket flies passed
a small red car in the back ground, which is about the size of a bus
compared to the models..
Then he realizes they are model cars..
Maybe a xmas pressie..

yeh, they look pretty damn close, main way to tell is the standoffs poking out of the bonnet and boot. but then again, some look like a real car, when they go all out.
