Lowering! Prices..

Hi guys, I'm going to lower my 98 VT. I want it to be as low as possible without being illegal and I was wondering what springs / kits you guys would recommend? My mates a mechanic and he said if I get the gear he'll fit it up for me, so any advice on what to buy? I know I'll need a camber kit too. I'm thinking cheap as possible, as some quotes of 1200 bucks to lower is way out of my price range, I need much cheaper, so maybe buying the stuff myself is the way to go..
Also, what are the downsides to cutting the springs? I know safety, not good for the car etc. but would you be unlucky to get done by the cops for it, is there a good chance you'd get away with it?

i got my vx done at peddlers over here in qld, costed about 900-1000 to get it lowered to about 2.5". has peddler springs/shocks in it.. the springs and shocks are pretty exqpensive as well....

l got my vs lowered for $400. Thats 2.5 inchs at the front and 3 inchs at the back. I already had pedders suspension on so all l paid for was the springs plus labour. You should be able to drop it pretty far since your vt has IRS.
