There is a tapping noise when i start the car, in the engine bay. After it warms up it goes away.
I think it is either one of the Lifters sticking or one of the tappets has goneeeeee?
Any help on this one??
Thanks

telling us what engine you have could help....

Is there anything you can do to make it go away or will it just sort itself out?
Its just cold ,when the oil heats up ya said its fine.
Its a Holden get used to clunks and grinds
As long as it starts and goes hard shes all good![]()
1] How long does it take to go away?
2] Does it do this everytime the engine has stood unrun for 5 or more hours?
3] Have you done regular oil/filter changes?
4] Has it done a lot of k's?
If it takes more than 1 minute to go away and occurs everytime the engine starts after a long stand you should consider piston slap. A 6 cyl engine will stop in one of 3 places and usually random so if it were a tappet it would be also random as it would not always be holding a valve open and therefore no incentive to bleed down. Piston slap usually occurs at high k's but can occur at lower k's if the engine has:
overheated
had irregular oil changes so that the piston has worn
has a defective or undersize piston
Likewise if it is hydraulic tappet and bleeds down when holding a stationary valve open it can be caused by:
foreign material on the lifter valve
infrequent oil/filter changes
worn lifter valve seat
oil system draining of oil
slow to get oil pressure
Thanks for that Don most helpful.
I have done regular changes on it. is due for one this wend.
It has done 118,000 so it should be fine.
It usually is there for about 1 min and then goes away once the car is heated up a little. It pretty much does it everytime that car has sat there for more than 5 hours yeah.
Cheers
Yeah did an oil change on the weekend and it all seems to have gone now.
Sorted thanks for the info.
