Default What are caliper irons?

Ok, well I have heard the term used, and had a look at my brakes but don't know what to look for =/.

Anyway, my brake pads (which I have been told are the calipers) are getting replaced at my next service, but I noticed that the part that clamps onto them while they spin was actually touching them. Obviously the car was jacked and was not switched on, but is that right? It's only lightly touching, but if you spin the wheel it made a very, very light scraping sound.

caliper irons....old name for caliper support or caliper bracket

they are the part of the brake assembly that takes all the force and
they are the part the brake pad pushes against when you brake

and on commodores...are the rusty curvy bit that disappears
around the back of the caliper (and bolt onto the axle or axle housing etc)

and they are probably the only bit of a brake assembly that never wears out

hth

cheers
