Handbrake turns in RWD car?
I have just one question - when you do a handbrake turn in a rear wheel drive car (ie. my commodore) do you have to put your foot on the clutch to stop the engine stalling? It seems like a fairly obvious question, but I've never done it in *my* car before (The Camira is old and needs to be punished, but I never said that ).
SO, any tips? I don't do them dangerously though, I've only done them in the Camira to make some u-turns easier (it even helps at slow speeds) because the Camira is FWD with a bigger turning circle than my commodore.

Whilst not completly required it does help, esp in practice. Once you've got the hang of getting the tail end loose you'll discover that the next part is doing it with engine power - the trick being to use the handbrake to get you started then power to complete the turn.
Of course we're talking off public roads eh guys

Thanks, Jetspin . I'm pretty sure I know where you're coming from.
I have no reason to really do it on public roads, especially since I *can* spin the rear wheels using the accelerator . But I'm just thinking in maybe an exceptional circumstance where the skill may come in handy. I don't know what SORT of exceptional circumstance, but just in case something *does* come up

these sorts of things should only be attempted in a controled situation, IE: raceways etc out away from local traffic roads. So I do hope your not thinking about performing those actions on the roads because im sure your aware it is a very dangerous thing to even try

Your welcome. Also, your sarcasm is like a beam of light - not exactly in-con-f******-spicuous if you know what I mean!!

I wouldn't even dream of putting my handbrake while in motion in my Coomodore as for one reason the size of the hand brake drums on the inner side of the rear discs, I reackon they would be torn out, then another with the commodores they make a clunking sound whilst you engage the hand brake in motion. So I am not keen. But for chucking a 2 second U Turn they are wonderful tools.
Cheers,
Jim

I'm with Jim on this one, Commodores aren't the best cars for doing handbrakies, don't stress if the cable 'clanks' on while pulling it.
had lots of fun myself in FWD cars, especially in the wet! Seemed to have grown out of doign it now thow, but everyone has to try it!
Just not on the road - ok?
Cheers

I think you got the wrong man there Baldric. I believe MaNiac_VP has the right to a fair trial, and I'll testify in his defence as I dont remember him being there. Now all we need is a judge, anyone?

yeah that's right jetspin..
use the h/brake to step the rear end out, then use the throttle to keep it out and control it. you don't need to use the clutch at all - the momentum of the car will ensure the engine doesn't stall.
using the handbrake is cheating a bit - the real skill is in using the throttle to get rear end hanging out. this is harder, as you need to be more delicate to ensure you don't step it out too fast and spin.
it's more fun on gravel roads or in the wet. but remember: NEVER DO IT WHEN ANYONE ELSE IS AROUND OR WHERE THERE ARE ROADSIDE HAZARDS (ie. stick to the racetrack)
here is a crash test into a pole at only 30 km/h - note how the pole just cuts right through the car:
