Default getting rid of scratches

hey guys. i need some advice. i have some scratches on my maroon commy, especially on the passenger side and top of boot and also where someone has keyed my car (luckily it didnt actually go deep, just scratched the surface). what is the best product to get rid of these little scratches (hardly any are deep ones) if there is one?

Thankyou

Bek

Cutting compound worked OK on mine but dont overdo it. Get the really fine stuff, only use a dab of it and dont rub too hard. I made a weird mark on mine with it, trying to get pinstriping off, now theres a long mark where the clear coat has rubbed off.

Just be careful and you should be OK. I used a fine Kitten cream.

Yeah I got some scratches in my car as well. Some are light and some go deep in the paintwork. Is there any places that anyone can recommend that will take out deep scratches without need of the whole panel being re-sprayed? I want it to look like I never scratched it whout the cost of a pannelbeater.

Auto Glym Paint Renovator is a really fine compound...or Auto Glym Super Resin Polish...they actually recommend using the resin polish first to take it out, and if it doesn't work then go the renovator...I used the Resin polish and it comes up a treat afterwards

Actually give Meguiars Scratch X a shot. It's about $19 at K-Mart or about $22 at your local auto shop. It's in a tube as opposed to a bottle. Get a Meguiars (or similar) application pad (it's a foam sponge basically) and then apply a small amount to the paint. Let it dry, then get some terry towel and buff it off really hard! The harder you rub, the better it will look. You will probably have to do many applications... I'm talking like 10-20 to get it looking really good.

This product is guaranteed to remove more scratches than it leaves, so rubbing hard is not an issue. Btw, Meguiars Scratch X can get VERY ADDICTIVE! Once I saw the finish it gave (takes out all paint swirls if you do it well), I couldn't stop applying it. Just don't get upset when your first application doesn't look that good. You have to do it a lot to get it looking good.

Btw this will obviously not fix any scratches that go under the paint to the undercoat or metal. If you wanna fix them, get some Holts touch up paint and carefully fill the scratch with the paint so that the scratch is up to the level of the original surface. Then let it dry for a few days and then cut back the excess paint so it's back to the original level. It's quite hard to do and takes a lot of time, but done correctly it can look very nice.

Good luck!!

I agree with redfox, we have used Meguiars Scratch X and sucessfully removed scatches many times. Another thing you may find handy is to use this for removing scratches in CD's/DVDs/games etc... works pretty good

Yes Scratch X works a treat but, like redfox said, you have to rub damn hard. I did 2 commodores in one day, then waxed both that night (carnauba wax - amazing!). I was soooo buggered! (I'm only little ) My wrists absolutely killed at work for the next week cos I had to do heaps of lifting and stuff
Anyway...this is just to warn you
Next best thing is a professional job

Thanks for the tip Julie! I'll have to try it
