VE airbox setup

Was wondering what the extra airbox thing that connects up to the throttle body is on the V8? The normal airbox feeds into this long plastic box which then feeds in to the throttle body. What's it for? Reducing turbulance?

all the vz's had them if your talking about the axtra chamber part on the intake pipe. dunno what its there for though
