LINGLONG L688
There’s a world of difference between good and bad. The wet braking exercise on the Linglongs was a tad scary after a succession of predictable outcomes on some impressive rubber. There was a horrible moment when I was concerned that the Falcon would fire across the expanse of open area and finish up splattered against the concrete barriers rimming the skidpan. It was like driving on glass, with none of that comforting grip usually felt when you first nail the brake pedal. Wet cornering immediately revealed iffy grip levels and instant oversteer if the driver as much as breathed on the accelerator. The rears continually wanted to make a break, and the whole car pivoted on the fronts. Our dry corner testing also failed to redeem the Linglong. The working side folded under, resulting in scarring to midway down the sidewall. There was the audible groan from the hardworking front, accompanied by way too much understeer and a general absence of the levels of adhesion proffered by the competition. Not a pretty result. Perhaps these tyres last forever, but they don’t measure up well against other brands at the budget end.

Going where no late model stato/caprice has gone before.... GAME ON!!
wow... google failed me :|
i never think to use yahoo *slaps forehead*
as for the grip, i kind of found that out today when i turned traction control off *shudders* i'm thinking i'll go for some Maxxis MA-Z1s.... when i can get $800 up for 4 new tyres.
Ahahaha, linglong, the cheapest of cheap chinese tyres, you poor bastard. Frankly I'd rather run sava's than those pieces of pus. I'd rate them in the same league as ceat tornado's, scary stuff. If you're after decent tyres on a budget I reccomend federal 595's, also chinese but surprisingly good, only problems are they're a tad noisy and they're a softish compound so wear isn't marvellous. Cheaper than maxxis though. hehehe, just remembered that the tyre in my avatar is a 595.

tell me about it. i'm not game to take traction control off again. when they smoke they smell more like cat pee than rubber. one run down the strip with those street tyres. but yeah, for some reason me getting maxxis for my 18" is cheaper than my manager's 17" ones![]()
I wouldnt use anything but 3000A's at the very minimum, depends how much you care for your car, and yourself.

3000a's? i was going to go for the MA-Z1s... based on a lot of good reports...
3000A's are ok, most people I know who've used them reckon they wear too quickly though, wouldn't say that running something cheaper would neccesarily compromise safety. Nankang NS2's, Falkens in various patterns and the aforementioned Federals are all cheaper than the 3000A's with perfectly acceptable performance. Pretty much the only reason people are willing to pay more for the dunlops is because of brand recognition.

strangely, i'd heard the same about the wear on the 3000As.
nothing but good reports about the MA-Z1s though. any differing opinions on those?
essentially i don't want to be spending $400 a tyre, but i don't want to be getting cheap crap either.
i got some Wanli tyres, 235/40R18 Fortuna Sport S2000 in a tyre rim package, another chinese brand, anyone herd much about them?

I had a pair of Fedral's 215/15 on the back a VS I owned for about a week.
2 fishtail moments and I took them off.
They had no grip at all in the wet.
Cheap tyres = Danger Danger Danger.
I got Nankang NS2s - compared to my skinny old stockys they're out of this world! I never loose traction with them, wheras with the old ones I could send myself into a fishtail at 60 if I accelerated too hard in the wet - ie, any more than 1/4 throttle.
I'm happy with them - maybe if I tried something better that wold change![]()
Not necessarily. Most seriously cheap tyres are crap, but there are some real bargains out there. I'm guessing that the federals in question were 621's or some other older pattern? A lot of federal's earlier stuff really is quite scary, actually a couple of patterns are highly favoured by taxi fleets which makes it even scarier. The newer ones like FD1's, FD2's and 595's are actually ok. Most manufacturers have some absolute duds, just gotta be aware and steer clear of the crap.

On my VT i am currently running a new set of 235/45/17 Dunlop DZ101's and i am very impressed with them especially with the amount of grip they have even with only 1000 or kms of use.
They didnt cost much either, they came the the equivelent of $170 AUS fitted and ballanced.
not too sure if you can get them in Australia but most reputable places here in NZ sell them.

Different people have different driving styles so go for a tyre that suits your driving style
Don't forget as well that tyre compounds, tread patterns, etc can change slightly during a particular model's life so what may have been a good tyre for you in the pastmay not be so good anymore, etc
If ignorance is bliss why aren't there more happy people around ?
