Where can I find a list of what engines can be put into cars (I want to know the biggest sized engine I can put into a VK, for example) and the total power it can support. Without requiring an Engineers Cert.
maybe a 308 stroke out to a 383 i think with the chev motors you would have to get a engineers cert or with you changing it from a 6 into and 8 i hope thats helps you out
How about a VN V6 motor in the VK?

You'd be stuck with 5.0 Holden engine unless you stroke it, unless you can find an engine that is 'similiar in power, weight and emission standards to that of the original engine, may be fitted to such a vehicle' Quote from Vicroads modification guidelines
Basically any engine swap that sees alterations to chassis or frame of vehicle or an engine that wasn't part of that model range (VL turbo motor into VK, VN 3.8 into VK, etc) will require an approval certificate

If ignorance is bliss why aren't there more happy people around ?
How much would one cost? Dad said in excess of $3,000?
i know that sticking an engine that runs unleaded into a car that had a leaded engine needs tto be engineered. engineering isnt all bad. a few dollars but you know its safe and you get the engine you want then.
It all comes down to how much work the engineer has to do.
If it is a (relatively) simple engine swap - ie minimal power/capacity change with minimal chassis mods then your cost could be well under $1k.
If you are talking about something mad like a 308 into a Gemini (yes I have seen it) with lots of mods then you will be talking serious $$$ if you could get it approved at all.

One of the fellas that I used to work with put a VT SS engine and auto in to a Vk shell. Only about $6K for a new motor and box but all up it spiraled out of control and ended up close to $18K and about 18 months off the road. He just took it in and cause VK came out with a V8 the just swapped over rego and he drove it away. This was in QLD.

You can do any modern engine into a older car where the engine has passed the same or a newer emmisions laws, that's why you can run the RB30 in the VNP/R/S because the series 3 Skyline passed the same ADR with the RB30 in it and it doesn't require any fabrication to put it in. There are new laws that will be adopted very soon now and they are a bit tougher on engines size and will pretty much ban any forced induction V8's and any big block sized motors in a VB-VS sized car
