I'm turboing my VR and wondering how to go about getting all all roadworthy and legal with the kit? The kit is home made with a front mount intercooler which will be visible from the front of the car is which worries me and makes me want to get it all legal.
Anyone else turbo'd their commodore and had any issues with cops?
If i get done with it what do i get done for? do i just get put off the road?
I'm on my P's also.
if any thing you would only get defected, but i dont think you should turbo it whilst on p plates, that might be more interesting
Too late, already paid for the turbo and its going on next week.
Well i've only got another year and a half to wait to get off p's, thats if i dont lose my licence in that time:P
I've heard people talking about getting an engineer certificate or something to say the turbo complies with the law or whatever needs to be done.
Just wondering how much it cost to get this done or is there other ways?
In Victoria, I guess most states are the same you need to see an engineer to approve the installation and you also will need to pass an emissions test, that's the killer because they charge you a couple thousand for that. You can forget the emissions test if it's running straight lpg and just get the transport engineer to look over it (so that's the way to go)
hmm no lpg here, few k for emissions test? id rather keep gettin canaried and get dodgy rwc! lol
Any other way? a cheaper way to pass emissions?
they can sting u for a pod aswell, and you have to to a drive by noise test, so keep you origional box for when it gets engineered, even if u do get defected for it u can just wack your old box back in and pass.
bit hard when the pod is on the battery side not the air box side, would have to have some extra piping made up to connect to the air box
Check out the vehicle modification guides from the RTA in your state. If you are in vic the url is www.vicroads.vic.gov.au.
If you are pulled over by the police the only things you will get "done" for are the bits that don't comply with the relevant ADR's, vehicle modification guidelines and whatever you did to get pulled over in the first place.

If you are cited for emissions, you might be required to present the car at an EPA testing station. They may put a prohibition notice on the car that prevents you from driving or disposing of the car (ie selling) until the car passes. This is not something you can get around with a dodgy rwc.
Also remember that the Vicroads inspector (and any rwc tester unless he is totally daft) will check that the items noted on the defect are corrected before he will remove the notice.

Nope the vicroads don't inspect the car i've had a canary before and i just handed them the roadworthy and they told me to peel it off.
Good luck insuring it.

I'll worry about getting it legal before i insure.
hmm so how much does it actually cost to get it all engineered and epa tested?
Check out www.vicroads.vic.gov.au. There is a list of approved consulting engineers who can certify the work for you. The place selling your turbo setup may also be able to help in this respect. I would talk to an engineer *BEFORE* you buy anything (or lay a spanner on your car) so you don't travel down the wrong track which could cost you a fortune.
Talk to the professionals in the field. They will be able to give you far more reliable information than a group of anonymous posters on a website.

My mate's insuring his turbo VS for $1400 a year through Justcars and he is 19. He had it pretty easy with the engineer... not sure exactly how much it cost to get all the paperwork but it wasn't much.
