I have had 6 cars now on LPG and have usually used a specific LPG engine oil. It is supposed to be better for the higher temperatures produced. Incidently, the old oil is never discoloured after it is removed. The price of this oil has risen, relative to standard oil, over the last few years. I have read the blurbs on the oil containers recommending the use of their product (surprise surprise) but now I'm wondering if any of you guys use this type of oil in your LPG cars or if it's just another way for the oil companies to rip us off? Thanks.
Without being an oil expert, my understanding is that the LPG oils are:
a) have a higher viscosity rating in order to have similar actual viscosities at higher temperatures while running on LPG as do conventional oils running on petrol.
b) buffered, ie. pH stabilised, to prevent acid damage (corrosion) of internal engine parts caused by combustion products unique to LPG. Mostly I think nitrogen based acids produced as a consequence of higher combustion temperatures.
i'm still running penrite HPR10 in mine, i've asked a few people about this and they've all said as long as its serviced regulary (6months/5000kms) then i shouldnt have any issues with running regular oil in it.
I may be ignorant, but I didn't think that supercharged engines could run on LPG. Obviously, according to your ride this is possible. Very interesting. Good info re the frequent oil changes too.
