ye my mate sprayed his whole engine bay, then decided he didnt like tha colour then sprayed it a diff colour then changed his mind again, so now its just a mix of peelin and ****ty sprays :P
I was about to say
"What the hell is wrong with spraying your engine bay - then respraying it a different colour" haha. That's what I did.
I really dislike people that paint their engine bay's black. Just doesn't look right.
So projects that have gone bad, care to elaborate?
Would anybody actually admit it???? Oh yeah....a 'mate' did this.....

I've got a good one. Dad was putting new timming chain in the sigma motor 2.6 way back in 1988. An old mate came over to help him and they got the dots wrong on the sproket. The motor chucked a rod 120km down the road. It was specky with a great cloud of smoke with a clater clater sound. The car made a further 30kms getting slower all the time. Stopped 20km short of Pt Augusta. Cost $2,000 for a whole new engine. Yep just for a Sigma motor! Mum wouldnt let him fix it again not even from the wreckers.

attn Über geeks, i play Second life. Patrio Graysmark.
I did an engine rebuild on a Datsun ute with a 1.2 when I was 18. Used a crank from a 1.6, all went well...or so I thought...the only thing that wouldnt go in were the thrust shims on the mains....the things that stop the crank from going forwards and backwards. Got about 100kms when the temp shot up, the oil light came on and them rattle rattle rattle BANG. threw a big end, the rod came back down on the cam and threw it out the side of the block and through the guard. Was about 2 in the morning and I was about 30kms from my town. Had to wait for the bread truck to come past at 4am to give me a tow home.
I had to replace the tensioner pulley when it become very noisy, nedless to say me and my cuzing where wrenching the thing when we thought we had it, when we cracked it, (the first twist). then dad come home saw us straining and walked over and watched for a lil, then leaned over and said, its left hand thread! we cracked up laughing for a while, then headed into town for a new tensioner assembly
learning is fun, and expensive![]()
This'd be a nice thread for General or The Pub, how come only posted in the VR - VS Forum? Or is that a dangerous question to ask..
Don't really have any pics but a pretty fun story, I had a blue VH SL/X a while ago, great condition the only problem was the blue 202 motor in it was broken (holes in three cylinders) so I bought a black 202 motor for it. Problem was when we used the Super Cheap hoist the motor went up out of the back of the guys ute, paid him and he left, then a bad thing happened. It wouldn't go down low enough to reach the ground (a good.. meter or two) so what did we do? Couldn't leave the engine hanging from the garage roof so it was Safeway Trolley to the rescue! And that is where the motor sat for about 2-3 months (I lost interest at the time), and finally we decided to get it out of there and return the trolley.. well that was interesting wasn't it, laid out some stocky tires on the ground and tipped the trolley (seemed like a good idea) and if I recall correctly the motor bounced slightly, then there was a mess of oil everywhere, all over the tires and it was a pretty sad sight..
Both the car and motor are gone now, probably the closest I had got to a roadworthy car, but that'll change in a few months
Lesson learned: Use rope when moving an engine around with a hoist, not the actual hoist itself!![]()
haha juzza dont you know when dropping a 202 it should be attached to a chain and over the side of a boat... good anchors![]()
Going where no late model stato/caprice has gone before.... GAME ON!!
well this isnt really related to this forum at all but it was for the old fokes
for all intesive purposes it was a toyota camry
anyway i went to install a new h/u in this thing wat a ****in **** of a job blew bout 20 fuses and the like then when i finally had it all rite turned the car on turned on the stez n wala the head lights were on dont ask me how or y but they were on and wouldnt turn off even wif the car off and everything so i disconnected the headlite fuse for the nite rewired it the next day and problem solved still to this day dont no wat happend

i built my self a 308 once and left 1/2 a main bearing shell out. more supprising it didn't seem to do any damage. wont ever do that again
MY dad wired up a radio in my mum's Mazda Rx7 back in 1994.
She drove it for about 100m's and it caused a fire, she parked tried to put it out... it got too big and it torched the interior of the car.
They're divorced now.
Go figure.

Me and a mate were trying to replace the rubber overhead cam belts on an old GS Citroen he had at the time.
We had the whole front of the car off, engine was completely exposed etc.
The cooling fan on those things is connected directly to the crankshaft which needed to be removed, so we undid the big nut that held it on, no sweat.
Then for some reason we needed to move the car a bit, can't remember why now , but we thought no worries, everything is still connected up etc, it will only be a short run so we can do without the cooling fan for a second or two.
Anyway, so my mate hits the starter and the engine goes from zero to 90,000 rpms in about one millisecond, absolutley screamed and then BANG! it stopped just as quick as it had started.
We looked at each other thinking "Holy crap! What TF happened!".
On inspection we found we had left the throttle return spring disconnected so the carb was at WOT.
And that big nut that holds the fan on........... also keeps the timing belt sprockets on the crank.....
So when he hit the starter the engine went to max noise, the timing sprockets and timing belts flew off in all directions and we bent every valve and damaged every piston in the engine in less than a second.
A very expensive mistake.....![]()
lmaoo, gettin sum good stories, (shame about all tha damage 2 these cars but :P )
Weissen was that car his daily driver or wat? if so poor bloke
not really a project gone wrong, but dad decided to paint the firewall of his 2 door 57, then went and sat the engine in it. anyway when he took the engine out, they hit the firewall, it now has to be bogged up and re painted.

LMAO... 90000rpm!
I've just got a minor one.
When i was doing an oil change one weekend i had some trouble getting the oil filter off. My dad came out to see what i was cursing about. He says to me "i'll fix that" and grabs a big bloody screwdriver, jams it through the oil filter, gives it a twist and ripped it in half leaving the base of the filter still stuck in place. At that point i threw my hands in the air, said to him "it's your problem now" and i left. I still don't know how he got the rest of it off, i didn't want to ask.
