They replace the timing chain with two large gears top and bottom and a set of smaller ones in between.
Make an awsome sound.........but **** to run. If they dont get oil'ed properly your ###ed big time, stear clear.

pj gear drives make the sound all the time gilmer drives only when u get the revs up
ive got a set in the garage that i was thinking of putting in. why arn't they any good?
Timing gear sets are ok as long as they are not straight cut which I think these ones are. If you've ever driven a Holden with a stuffed trimatic just multiply that sound by about 10.
All gear drives are straight cut they cant work any other way. the problem with gear drives is the vibration they pass from the bottom end to the valve train brings on early failure of some components like valve springs, lifters, rockers and such is not so much of a problem with motors that get rebuilt often like drag car engines, but with street driven motors would have to keep eye on your top end and oiling system i would think, but they sound dam tuff. i put one on the vk motor cant wait to hear it. any commy with gear drive, hi stall and low gears sounds wild!!
wtf? all the gilmers ive heard get louder as the revs build up...

Sure it was Gilmers then? But, as im in the car, its hard to hear alot, plus my exhaust is fairly loud. Straight Cut gears will be much louder
Not all gears are straight cut....Standard timing gears are helical ie: the are cut in a curved angle. This reduces noise but on a powerful engine the gears push themselves with opposing forces. One gear goes forward the other backwards. Hence the reason for straight cut gears. Engines that rev quickly have a tendency to push one gear through the timing cover.
