Default Tranny Differences VR - VY

Just wondering what changes were made to the transmission.

I know the VR was the first model to come out with the computer controlled transmission. I understand the engine management system controlled the auto in the VR

Now I believe the VR auto was used in the VS S1. Were there any changes? does the tranny still run off the engine computer. This would mean I can't put a Series 2 tranny in a series one VS

VS S2. I've heard this was a different transmission. What was different?

VT S1. I know this was a very similar tranny to the VS S2. I understand the outer case is shaped a bit different. What internally was changed if any?

VT S1 - VY What changes were made to auto.

When they change the autos say VS S1 - VS S2 do they just change shift points, or do they use differnet bits or what?

What transmissions out of VS S2 - VY can be put into my VS S1????

ok, im no expert...but here's what i basically understand the flow as.
VR-VT everything mechanically is the same, for the series ll VS onwards an added trans cooler was implimented.
VX the converter changed, i think to a larger diameter as i've heard that to use a VX converter on a previous model the service panel needs to be modified/cut to make room.
i think alot of the mapping of shift points would have alot to do with the gear ratios and tuning - ie, where the torque peaks,etc..
this would just be done on the pcm and im not aware of any mechanical differences to the 'box between models to acheive this.
so basically im saying that any 4L60E transimission from VR-VY could be put into your VS and work as far as i know.

They all have one thing in common. All Holden's 4 speeds are crap. Unfortunately the manuals aren't much better. A weak link in an otherwise good car.

Whats so wrong with the autos...

At least I like how they change compared to a ford auto...

i think in stock form the 4L60E leaves a bit to be desired, it can be a little "docile". but with very simple changes it can be turned into a quick and effcient transmission which is quite good.

The 4L60E is quite differently electronically from VR-VS and again from VS-VT, and then from VX - VY it changed again.

Thinks such as changing from a normal on/off solenoid to a PWM solenoid for certain controls, resistances changed, things like that.

Nothing wrong with the 4 speed autos provided you have a trans cooler. Ask someone who has had to replace or reco their 4 speed auto if they had a trans cooler and 9 out of 10 will say "no" My first VS was had a heavy duty tow pack fitted from the factory and included a whopping great trans cooler. Much bigger than those standard in the series II VS. I drove it for 260,000ks before I even gave a trans service a thought (this was before I became much more mechanically minded. I was so ashamed) and the car already had 160,000k's on the clock when I bought it. When I sold the car it had 387,000ks on the clock. Original motor and original gearbox still running perfect (needed a new diff though).
Car theives should be treated just like horse theives and cattle rustlers in the days of the wild west... Hang them!
