    Default New engine? decisions, decsions.

a mate of mine has a 1975 TX gemini coupe 1.6L 4spd manual.

now he's thinkin of changing engine and trans but he's not sure what he wants and also what he can legally put in there, i suggested the SR20 or maybe a 3.8L but he was thinkin more along the RB26 or 30.

i have seen drag car gemmys with 5.0L's in them but i dont think it could ever be legal, so how big can he go??

would a straight 6 fit in?

coincidentally, ive been talking to a guy in the us, who owns a chevrolet chevette, which is the same as a tx gem, jsut with diff badges, and hes putting in a l27(vp v6 with same manifold as ive got, see sig)

i doubt hed legally be able to put anything other than a 4cyl in without an engineers cert, but im not familiar with sa transplant laws.

doesn't matter if he needs a cert we just need max capacity because i have heard even with a cert you can only go so far legally

An SR20 would be good or try to get an engine out of a Piazza which is a twin cam turbo holden.

Man if you can stick a 3.8 in definately go it. There is a guy on the forum running a VP engine and a CRS kit in a gemmi.

VN would be perfect because they get torque real low down. This guy at work is talking about building a rally car and I'm trying to convince him to do the same conversion. Do a search you'll find the guy that did the conversion. He'll need widder tyres if he does.

Another option is a FJ20. Cast iron block but I've heard of some quick cars running this engine.

    check out www.fj20.com

JD I'm pretty sure Hones and Kingsley (the S/C V6 gemini) both have engineers certificates.

www.justgemsofsa.net - they're both members of that site you could look for info on there.

p.s. mods remove the link if its not allowed

If he wants to drive it on the road, we were putting twin cam rodeo 4 bangers in them back in the late 80's/ early 90's. They went like stink and were dead easy to do with very few legal issues. Shoving a turbo on one would also be relatively easy.

    Cheers,

Just keep in mind that the new Vic P Plate laws won't allow any turbo/charged cars for P platers...
