Do i have a balance shaft?

Ok guys just a quick question.
I have a s1 Vn with the original motor. There is a loud rattling sound coming from the motor although not always and i was told it could be either the balance shaft bearings or the timing chain.
My question is....does the S1 motor have this balance shaft too.
I was told years ago that only S2 onwards have them however after reading lots of things you guys have written, im thinking its just the addition of the bellmouth that smoothed out the S2 motor.
Any help would be great.

Yep, series 1 had them too, is a common problem for them to flog out. If doing that, it would also pay to change the timing chain as well, it would be the same age and would probably need doing in the near future anyway.
