K&N filter. Worth putting in this?

G'day, this is a question for my Mum's Lancer but is relevant for all cars I suppose.

Is it worth putting in a K&N filter into a car without a CAI kit or headers in?

I assume the only benefit would be is it's reuseable.

That would be the only benefit on a car like a Lancer. Check the cost of the K&N against the cost of a std one and also it's replacement interval. Divide the K&N cost by the std cost and then multiply that number by the number of k's that the replacement interval is. If you are going to keep the car longer than the resulting kms then do it. Example: K&N filter $130. Std filter $40. 130 divided by 40 = 3.25. Replacement interval 40k. 3.25 x 40k = 130k. Figures are only an example but you get what I mean.

wow, Abba fan is pretty spot on there, you can always add a CAI using air duct piping and other bits and pieces from Autobarn, that with the K&N panel filter would kick ass.

I Don't know what ass it would kick. I wouldn't bother with any decent air filter it will make no difference at all.

I agree with Minux here, countless reveiws and test have been carried out on K&N filters (along with most other "Hi-Flow" filters) and the generel concenus is, they aint worth the cash. I think that people get a little bamboozeld by the use of things like "Hi-Flow" & "Less Restrictions". The reality is that your car dosent need to inhale better, and if it does need to, then extra intake piping is the answer, not a "better" filter.

You get no power gain. Maybe better filtration and you never have to replace it again are the only benefits.

The CAI I made for my VYSS needed a K&N as they offer the equivalent airflow for a thinner panel thickness. This is the only reason I would bother using one.
