    Default Brake pads

I own a 2002 commodore SS and I keep changing brake pads and rephasing the disc every 3 months. Is this normal? How often do u guys change brake pads// ever thought of upgrades? like brembo?

Every 3 months? What kind of driving do you do?

Maybe you should look into some harder compound brake pads, will reduce life on your rotors, but the pads will last longer.

Question i change maybe once a year.

Are you replacing just because is been 3 months or because they need to be changed?

If then do need too be changed then there maybe something wrong the the pad holder (Sorry don't know names), that is making them constaily rubbing on the disc... its you're car sluggish at all??
I dont know but can you have water(or too much) in the brake fiuld that expands with Heat then constaly rubs wilst hot?

And if then dont need too be changed.... dont change them.

    well depends....
the STANDARD front pads on mine lasted for 3 months before
I went out and bought a set of the fullface Police pads (from Holden)
About 12 months later, I then went to a track day and cracked a front rotor
    so stuff it....
I went out and bought a set of DBA xdrilled/slotted rotors and Formula Ferodo 'green' pads.
20,000k (and 4 track days at Sandown) later I have just replaced the front pads....
with another set of Formula Ferodo pads....!
so I suggest you are up for some decent brakes....

    btw
what do you mean by 'rephasing the disc'? never heard that before

    cheers

Sometimes the fact that hard steel type pads seem to wear the disc unevenly might make some people think they need replacing .
This is just what non asbestos type steel pads do.They sort of wear in to their own grooves in the disc so as long as the actual pad thickness is ok a few grooves in the disc made by these pads don't make any difference to the cars stopping ability .There is no need to remachine them when they look like this as it will just happen again.

And if you want your pads to last longer DO NOT get slotted or cross drilled rotors.

Slotted rotors would be taking a very thin scruff of the top of your pads every time your applying the brakes, hence deglazing your pads for better braking.

even the guys at the service centre are startled at this rate of replacement. I drive a li'l bit fast and due to the traffic conditions, I have to apply brakes constantly.. could tht be a reason?

i know friends who own jap cars, who do 3 times more braking than I do, but still, they replace their disks once a year.

20,000 k is good enough for slotted !! but depends.. prolly u guys got strict speed control there. how often do u ppl drive fast?

I drive at 140km/hr speed on an avg.. since I find a lot of ppl who want to race, I end up reaching 200+ almost every day.. and then ofcourse, i have to brake when someone cuts in front (which happens a lot).

I used to have a VP that would go through brake pads every 4mths.They used to last about 7-10000ks.Something about shit brakes on a series 1 VP
apparently they changed back to the VN brakes for the series 2.
I then bought a VT and haven't had to replace any in 60000ks (3 years). They're getting a bit worn now though.
Most cars i've had average about 50000ks between pads.

There are a few places you could end up driving like that, and none of them sell performance brakes.

Where is it that you're from that lets you drive 140 km/h average?

maybe its the age, but i've slowed down a bit.. trust me, im 'sane' u should see the other drivers on road... I live in dubai where cops race with ppl (yea, i've raced with them), cops have souped up skylines and supras at home.., and anything works with $$$$ if u get into trouble... there are radars and fines but nobody gives a s***.. for me, even though the speed is sweet, changing brakes every 3000 kms is pissing off.

Well I've gone to slotted rotors as has been widely publicised. I don't really care if its a set of pads every 20,000km because the added braking performance is outstanding, you really notice the difference esp in the wet.

Not that I speed (anymore) but its always good to know you can stop if you need to.

NO brake pad sold anymore contains any trace of asbestos anymore due to the dust fibres dont break down(what fibreglass dust will be like in a few yrs...) best pad to go for are ones with brass or something simalar inpregnated into the mould...

If your brakes make a squealing noise, it doesnt necessarely need new brakes and rotor machine, it could just mean that the pads arnt bedded in properly.
this causes the front brakes to glaze up and it turns to a dark grey colour. this will vdecrease braking and make then squeal like a mf
if you do get new brakes dont go so hard on then straight away, drive it for a couple oe hundred kms before braking hard. this will ensure that the brakes are bedded in properly and increase your braking power.
