    Default Usage?

Hello everyone, this is my first post and I have a quick question, and I thought you guy's and girl's might know best since this is a Commodore forum! Having being a Ford fan my entire life, I'm thinking about swapping and buying my first Holden. I'm looking at a 2000 VT SS Commodore, 5.7lt. I absolutely love the car, it drives like a dream and seems like a great base for modifications. Is there any reason why I shouldn't buy this particular model?

My main concern is petrol, the biggest engine I've owned has been a 5.1lt, which belonged to a 01 Ford Falcon XR8, (or was it 00?) which was stolen, and sent to crispy heaven thanks to some guys who were never caught and are best left unmentioned, before I break something. My XR8 was pretty good petrol wise, as I'm a fairly sensible driver, but can anyone give me a rough figure on in town/country km per tank? I'm looking at spending $15,000 max, and the VT SS is $13,999 asking price at a dealer, so I'm sure I could knock it down a bit. I appreciate you're advice, since you guys are the expects. Thanks in advance to everyone who replies, and have a good day/night!

well, im dont no that much about LS1's but ill try and help from what ive heard. the VT LS1 was the 1st holden LS1, and they have a bad reputation for oil leaks. if the one your lookin at doesnt leak, then the problem has either been fixed, or its one of the lucky ones that doesnt have the problem.

also, ive heard that if u do a maf-less edit that it improves fuel consumption. from what i can gather, there not to bad on fuel, but like all V8's, if u give it a boot full, then they will drink **** loads.

i wouldnt mind gettin one someday, but for now, im gonna stick to doin up my VP 5.0Ltr

either way, welcome to the good side of life and glad u have been converted ... almost there anyway lol

Nope, no reason at all why you shouldn't buy this car. As for fuel economy, it isn't too bad. I usually average between 12-14 litres per 100 k's around the 'burbs' and around 9 litres per 100 k's on the freeway.

LOL oil leaks? I am yet to see an LS1 that is leaking oil.

There is no reason to not buy this car, there were some issues with piston slap etc but seeing as you know this car it is obvious you do not have this issue.
before i had all the work done to mine i quite often got 700+ km's out of a tank on the highway, i also many a time did 500+ around town. Keep your feet like a gramps and all is good, get spirited and well....

Compared to your old 302 the Gen III will be a dream. It is simply an all round better engine and will use a heap less petrol. Some of the early GenIII's had oil usage problems and some piston slap but as far as I know they were all fixed under warrantee. I have never heard of the oil leak problem though.

I have had 2 of these engines. One in a VX SS and one in a recently departed VYSS and found both cars to be excellent and I personally didn't experience any of the problems listed above. If you had your heart set on a VTII then go for it - they are probably one of the better cars to buy 2nd hand IMHO.

Also if you baby it you can get like 12L/100k's

my mates parents have a GTO 280kw LS1 powered coupe and they get 10L/100k's but they drive it real real easy

Also when you put your foot down they go! Manual or auto?

Actually I'm not sure now.. are automatics better then manuals as far as petrol is concerned? I don't expect it to me a huge difference.. aah I can't decide.
