Default need help with veriable speed pully (any one with experience with them)

i have recently purchased a offroad buggie (2nd hand) and after 2 hours of use, i shredded the v belt. now the belt that came out of it no one is able to cross refrence to a belt in australia. so now i need to go out and find one that works in it. could you please answer the following questions as i have no real knowladge on how the pullys work.
would the width of the belt change the way the pully grips, i am currently trying to put 1cm belts in, whereas the belt that came out of it is 2cm.

do the cogs on the v belt do anything besides give greater flexibility.

do you know anyone in melbourne that sells cogged v belts besides powergrip who i have tried but will not let me test a belt in it before i buy. and im not willing to buy a non returnable or exchangable $80 belt.
    kind regards
    johnny

The width and v section of the belt make a difference. Having a narrower belt will make the belt run deeper in the pulley and wear the top edges of the belt out faster. The idea behind a cogged belt is to make it more flexible allowing it to run on a small diameter pulley. There are proper belts that will run on a variable pulley, you can get self adjusters that have a spring or manual adjusters that have a threaded shaft with a nut. What sort of buggy is it, and what motor is in it. It may pay to go to a distributor for that type of motor.
