Is it illegal to dump the exhaust at the diff??
I thought the law was, the exhaust must exit past the rear most opening window... Meaning dumping at diff = legal?
My exhaust rubber broke & dropped my exhaust on my diff and crimped it down to under 1" and its crackling real bad an running real ****.. I cant afford a new exhaust.....

You wouldn't be paying for a new exhaust if you took that in though, they'd be able to do something for you. Do you have a muffler at the rear that youd be losing if you chop it anyway?
Nah no rear muffler...

Thats what ive heard anyway.
Some people say less talk more action, i say more torque less traction.
i'm sure greenfoam looked into this a while ago and the conclusion was that it had to exit after the boot cause there are vents in the side of the boot which could possibly allow fumes into the passenger cabin etc. i'm putting slip joints on the V8 after the flowmaster mufflers so on track days i can drop the exhaust after the mufflers befor the diff etc. might just leave em off and only fit em for the WOF but i'm sure thats not legal here either but it's only goingto be a toy car so it's not going to be driven every dya anyways

i think it has to be around 400mm/40cm pass the nearest door... goes something like that anyway
Any thing non standard is a defect,Dumped at the diff wouldn't be legal in my view i would contact Transport s.a or the such in your state and ask them.

the 40cm sounds familiar to me also, just call vic roads and see what they say.
i think the term is that it has to be x mm away from the last passenger compartment or something like that.
Sorry another post..
This link is best.

Go to section 12 I think it was, exhausts. 40cm
As long as you exhaust comes out behind the rear most opening window, it's not too loud, it clears the tyres by at least 30mm and you don't remove a catalytic converter, it should be legal.

Check out the pdf linked by Bax. The short answer is nope. There are 2 reasons - You will be deleting 1 muffler which will mean your car is probably too loud plus the exhaust gasses could fill the boot area and in turn circulate into the passenger compartment giving you a nice sleepy feeling.

Nope. The vehicle standards pdf says no such thing. When are you guys going to research your posts before you hand out half arsed advise? It says that the outlet must be 40mm behind the rear most joint in the floor pan that is not continuously welded or permanently sealed. In the VN there are some vents in the boot which are not sealed and thus does not satisfy the "permanently sealed" requirement.

You could always seal up the rear vents in the boot and then that might be o.k![]()

i heard people talking about it before and they said it was
deilcious I believe.
Long story short, it looks like its illegal, but I'd call vic roads and ask them if you want to hear it right from the horses mouth, if not it looks like your off to the exhaust shop for a quick cash job. It shouldn't take them much to fix that section up. Really wouldn't cost much at all.
no chance of a dodgy temp repair?
Just drop the pipe's, have it coming straight from the extractors.. all good..
As far as i can ascertain, these forums are a medium where people can ask for advice, and other answer if they feel they have something to contribute. I think it's pretty ridiculous to assume that every post is researched before being added to the forum.
I would think that most members have enough common sence to know that the majority of posts offer the opinion of enthusiasts, not experts.

I think reaper's point is that some people are naive enough to take opinions offered as gospel and then wonder why they get defected. Where a suggestion is made referring to the legalities of a mod or situation then that suggestion should be researched before it is offered. Too many people believe too much that is posted here so incorrect advice leading to loss, damage or illegal mods is all too common. Just take a bit of responsibility when offering a suggestion so people aren't led astray.
Yep - exactly. Asking for advice is great and there are some very knowledgeable people here. If you are going to take the time in advising about things that can affect safety and the legality of the car, I would expect that you would also take the time to research your advice first and provide a link (or similar) to the relevant legislation or state roads authority. This makes it easy for the person asking (and anybody else interested) to verify whatever is claimed.

Vehicles built after 1988 must have the exhaust outlet that exits at the rear most section of the body work. Prior to 1988 they are permitted providing the exit 200mm rearward from the last opening window
