Paint Stripping

hey guys i just purchased a group a bonnet including scoop for my VP and its alpine white and my car is alaskan white therefore i have to strip her back and re-spray her...........now i know how to spray with a gun and compressor with enamel paint, but all the things i learnt to spray on were pre prepped...........how would i go about stripping the paint off the bonnet? sandpaper? (long ass job) or are there any other preferred ways of doing this? any help would be much appreciated cheers guys!!

the only easy way i can think of is get a couple of mates and a couple of orbies (orbital sander) they work a treat on big sanding jobs, also try that paint stripper stuff from supercheap, i wouldn't know how it goes as i still havn't got to work on my engine covers yet but will try and attack it tonight and let you know how effective it was.

Chemical stripper goo is very handy, but it burns like hell when you get it on you, so definately wear gloves and eye goggles. Just make sure you THOURGHLY wipe off all the goo, as it will wreck the paintjob.

Why strip the paint back to bare metal?

If the current paint job on the bonnet is in good nic just rub it back or fix any minor imperfections and then rub it back with some 1500 wet and dry and water, tac rag it or use K&N wax and grease remover and then spray it.

Allot of people make the mistake of assuming everything has to be stripped bare, thats not always true, although it can depend on what paint is underneath.

I would just give it a light sand, clean it, and then spray it.

One really quick way of preping it without stripping it all the way back is to rub on some paint stripper with a rag, leave it for a few seconds (just long enough to cut in) then clean the stripper off with another rag. By roughing the paint up before you start you'll cut your sanding time in half.
