I had the same thing. Could not find it myself and took it to my mechanic. He tightened and re-position the air intake and air box properly. Mine is a standard system and over the years it had come loose and was letting air into the mixture. All is fix now. Hope this helps you with your car.
Happened to dads vl as well. his is a series one [1986]. All i did is change the spark plugs to iridium ones. solved that problem! although i heard it happens quite regularly if you wash your motor, as water gets trapped in the spark plug holes. I suggest just give it a good run on the freeway. maybe 20 km's or something and burn off whatever is in there. Could also be a fuel pump prob but i doubt it.
crank angle sensor!!! its a common vl problem. Every VL does it. Sometimes they drive fine and then stall and wont start for awhile or other times you will be sitting at the lights and it stalls and you have to get it towed.

take the dizzy cap off and look for orange dust in there.the bearing goes and covers the sensor with dust and stopps them running properly or at all.and if not that probably airflow meter
i would have to agree with the crank angle senor a tiny bit of **** on it and she plays up me mate had the same prob .
do a code check take the passenger side kick panel off and turn the little screw in the side of the ecu by the two leds in the hole to diagnostic mode all the way right i think it is ther should be a sticker on it anyway.the first one will flash the 10s the second one will flash the 1s so say one flashes 2 times and other flashes 3 times you have code 23 theres a thread on here with what the error codes mean.dont turn the knob to hard or youll break it.you can also use these leds to set the airflow meter screew but thats a whole nother story.
get some contact cleaner out... then one by one, go over every single plug you can find in your bay, pull it off, spray contact cleaner on, then click in and out 30 times....
then contact cleaner again and repeat...
and see if that helps at all.
The VL loom is prone to corroded terminals and plugs everywhere... once stuff heats up and expands it might not contact properly etc..
worth a shot first cause it only costs like 5 bux to do![]()
check your fuel pump - the big external one - does it work nicely? my old calais had the same symptoms, it turned out was the fuel pump getting stuck - a sharp knock with a hammer loosend it up till i could afford a new one (damn drifting sucking up all the nissan/VL parts)
look like a weirdo though turn key... jump out.... roll under rear.... wack!! fuel pump starts to whine away happy as can be!
