OK i did a search and found plenty on cutting a car back ect. i couldnt find what im after.
ive bought some meguiars "wet look" polish. ive done a test patch and its gunna bring the purple car up smicko!
my question is, when im hand polishing the whole car am i better off polishing in a circular motion or in staight lines. Does that make any sense?
im worried it might show in the clearcoat. THANX. DAVID.
I dont mean to disagree, but being a detailer from way back (and unless things have changed since then) it was always best to polish in small circles.
Swirl marks are circular as well, but you will end up polishing against them anyway
thanx that makes sense.
Using the right cloths no you wont. Are you going to clean the surface first with something like the mguires swirl remover or scratch-x? I find that sort of thing helps a real lot. Be warned you will find muscles in your arms and back you never thought existed.
I go for the cheesecloth- you can buy from stupercheap. Make sure though that you get the all cotton one. The cotton should be an off white colour, going onto dirty colour. The brilliant white ones dont absorb so well and really dont work so great.
Paintwork is really soft, so any bare cloth you rub over it with a bit of force will show very slight scratches (only seen in the sun) but polish is intended as the medium that breaks down as you rub into the paint, diminishing the scratches.
I'm waiting till I can afford another of those orbital buffers- $25 for one I bought say 7 years ago, and she just keeps going. I think thy are $40 now, $100 for a good one from bunnings (circular buff) Then the maguires foam bonnet is the first one I want to try- one intended for removing swirls or applying wax. Being foam they shouldnt swirl with the right compounds. Lambswool bonnets work really well as cutters, but do swirl dark colours.
Hope this helps
u have been helpful thanx.
Have a look at the meguiars web site , They have a few handy hints on detailing your car
there are three types of people in the world , those who can count and those who can't
yup i will do. thanx Dayvo
Direct froma guy wont do a respray for less than 20k, straight rather than circular.

What!! He won't do any respray for under 20K. What a rip off.
What kind of respray he do?? 20k is way too much. Lol...
I use straight motion on my car, never do swirls and never use orbital polisher whatever they are called. They do more harm than good.
Orbital polishers will do no damage providing the correct compounds and medium (bonnet or bad) is used. Rotary polishers can burn corners in inexperienced hands.
I've done too many dark coloured cars to say they do more harm than good

I have always believed that when cutting, you use straight motion, when buffing you use circular. I hand rub when polishing and then use a $25 elcheapo polisher with a lambs wool pad to buff it. Can't really see any difference before and after though, cos it's a white car.
white kicks ass
you can leave a white car in the sun under a pine tree for 20 years, cut the hell out of it and it will still come up like factory. Almost.
just like a mate of mine's VP
And I can leave it for a month between washes. I drive a black car for work and it's filthy 5 minutes after it has been washed.
