    ecotec, cos parts are available.

alloytec cos you dont need parts available, and most advanced gm engine to date

    why not make a poll?

Ecotec - Alloytec is good in it's own way though. It's a double overhead cam engine, it lacks balls down below. If you put your foot down at the lights, hardly anything happens, keep your foot planted and you'll experience a mild "turbo boost uleh"..

The engine works best at high revs, which sucks for daily driving. If you want a driveable car that can actually tow something, the ecotec is heaps better.

As for a more advanced engine that does "less with more" on paper, the Alloytec. The Alloytec is a lot more refined and is like many of the DOHC Euro engines.

I'd take the Ecotec anyday. Even the 190 drives like crap.

edit: Try driving the Alloytec in hilly area's. I'd rather drive a Corolla..

alloytec all the way.. my old man's vz exec hwith 55000km has way more go than my vt with 130000km (vx engine and trans). You just have to get used to the electric throttle. The ecotec feels ancient in comparison.

I reckon the VT feels a lot more like a VN than a VZ

my dads mate has a vz sv6, it kills o2 sensors, sounds gayer with an exahust then a ecotec, expensive in parts, no down low power at all. id take an eco any day

I don't know it is a hard decision, NOT. ImpulseSV6's SV6 is pumping out 236hp at the wheels with only tune, exhaust and CAI.

    Alloytec all the way.

I am sure the Alloytec is not going to get a fair run considering there is probably hundreds of 18 year olds on here driving Ecotecs with 3inch exhausts, because they don't have the hard earned cash to step into an SV6 or 175, just yet.

Give it time fellas and ladies.

going with what lukas pukas said, Impulse sv6 needs new o2 sensors, his car does sound good and loud, but with the tune and zorst thats all there is at the mement with out spending in eacess of $10000 on doing anything else, the charges for the alloytec are still in testing and everything else is way expensive. in all honesty it would be cheaper to do a ls1 conversion then mod your alloytec.

    Alloytec any day.

I hate the ecotec with a vengeance... They sound ****. The alloytec may sound **** too, but it has a hell of a lot more potential than an ecotec.

    definetly alloytec,
ecotec = old, low tech, rattely, but does make good power with a strongish block, also loves to leak oil
alloytec = New, high tech, clean smooth and frugal engine, quite strong and built real well, dosnt appear to leak > i see at least one or two a day, electric throtle is poor in the vz but excellent in the ve > theres very little take off lag,

im also putting up a vote for alloytec cause i also own one

Alloytec is too new, you can't compare ecotec to alloytec. Who knows - alloytec may not last as long as ecotecs.

Ecotecs are robust enough to be trashed a lot and yet still hold up maybe with few leaks here n' there, at least mine does.

Man Ecotecs hate a thrashing. If you like seeing a vertical temperature gauge then sure they'll take a thrashing And a litre of oil every month

Agreed. Its hard to compare durability when the ecotec is so much older than the alloytec. I would say that most of the ecotecs werent leaking oil when they were only a coulpe of years old, so its unfair to say that eco's like to leak and alloy's dont.

In terms of performance, i cant back one or the other as i have not driven a VZ/VE, so my opinion would be somewhat biased towards eco's .

I use an Echotec for my boat. I'm not sure if it is the extra weight or the shape but the alloytec draggs on the bottom. The echotec digs in much better thus less drift

If your ecotec have been given a lot of trouble after trashing then something is not quite right. I trashed mine soooo many times and its run like a dream. Just a few oil leaks here n' there and that is to be expected in an engine of this age and kilometres (230,000km).

1- ecotec engines have 10 yrs experience, allotec has 3.
2- ecotec feel punchier off the line cos alloytecs have lower diff gears, if you really want to compare, put the same diff gears on them,
3- can an ecotec make 236rwhp unopened?, (how much hp did a 5L v8 come out with?)
4- as for the alloytec with a sports exhaust system sounding crap - its cos its got a crap system
    5- alloytec are dohc
6- alloytecs have the LS2 computer
7- alloytecs weigh less -(a bare block weighes 32kg)
8- ecotec has 97mm bore where the alloytec has 94mm, they both have the same stroke, -(therefore theoredically the same torque)
9- alloytec spark plugs have dual platinum electrodes and a service life of 100,000 miles without degradation in spark density.
10- alloytec plugs are easy to remove because they are located in the center of the cam cover
