    Default L & P plate legal modifications

    hi

ive recently acquired my first car - a 1990 VN calais wagon. so far ive bought all my sound system and am beginning the install. i will post the piccies when its done. i just have a few questions.

-i have searched for neon legalities and am unclear from what i have found. most of the info is based on other states laws. i reside in NSW and was wondering if some one could point me in the right direction in terms of legalities. from what i have gathered they must not be used whilst driving and must only be used when the handbrake is on - much like dash mounted screens.

please take note im only looking for legalities for the interior. as i dont want exterior lighting.

-secondly, what small modifications can i do performance wise that is legal. i want to get the aesthetics of the engine bay up to scratch. also possibly a little more power, i wont be street racing or doing stupid things, but if it can run smoother or easier it would be nice.

one last thing, what sort of paint should i use for materials such as the door trim or the console/dash? i dont want it to come up crappy as i want a nice finish.

thx in advance for any help
    cheers

As far as i know, all interior neons are illegal if the car is running. So basically just install a switch and dont have them on while cruzing. My mate had them in his car and got done for having them on while driving.

But u wouldnt want them on all the time anyway they get annoying as all ###k. Hope this helps.

Also some basic engine mods u can do which are street legal for P Platers (as far as i know, im a green P Plater so the laws dont effect me anyway) can be exhaust , extractors, Pod filter (i think thats the illegal one) etc little stuff like that. I have all that stuff done and some other stuff and i rip all the other cars power wise.

If im wrong on this please correct me, im not up to scratch with current defect laws.

thx guys, yea i was looking at the cold air intake. i had heard that engines had to be totally stock eg no CAI etc but i spose that was wrong.

and yea i wouldnt drive with them on anyway, just for a show thing but ill get them last as they really arent important. also, when painting the interior should i do basically all the panels? ive got a blue black theme inside and the current colour is a dark grey so its not a major transition. i was just wondering should i do the pillars etc just to keep it continuous?

    cheers guys

I'd rather just spend the $48 for the holden CAI... I used like 4" piping for a CAI on my old VL but theres no noticable difference between that and a holden CAI. I used to have 3" piping feeding into the VN box but removed it and put in a Holden CAI. Looks neater and no difference in power (that I could tell).

When painting vinyl or leather, use Interior Dye (i think the brand name is DYE, but not sure)

I used it on mine, and i have to convince people that my console came out of a car with blue interiors, because it colour matches the rest perfectly.

Also, theres no such thing as a VN Calais Wagon. VL were the only model to have a Calais wagon (and they are mighty sexy too, especially the VLCT manual ones)

my apologies, its an executive 1990 vn wagon as per multiple details i found in rego, purchase certificates etc

is that right? a 1990 Commodore Executive VN wagon?

cheers guys, ill look into that DYE as yea i do want it to look perfect, not like some garden paint sloshed all over it :P

well i just picked up the wiring for my amps and subs so ill be starting soon hopefully.

    cheers

will do, im starting tomorrow hopefully, so ill start the thread up tomorrow night and ill include initial design/thoughts etc as i want to do a complete write up/folio anyway. but it probably wont be as good as a lot of the installs here. it is a nice car but ive worked my ass off at maccas for the gear ive got the sound system

    2x 15" soundstream subs
2x fusion 3 way speakers (rear)
    1x fusion component set (front)
2x 4" sony xplods (no idea yet, maybe stock position?)
1x wecconic 4ch 800 watt amp (bridged channels for the subs)
1x boss 4ch 1000watt amp (for the fusion gear)
    1x pioneer 4950 mp h/u (i think)

i cant wait, but yea ill be painting the interior plastics (well dyeing them now) mostly black with blue highlights here and there. ill leave the stock floor carpet as is for now as its a darkish grey and will do fine. ill dye my dash mat black with a blue trim right around. same theme for the floormats, black with blue outer trim.

custom boot install keeping to blue/black theme.

only thing is is all im doing outside right now is the tinting, and by the sounds of it a diy CAI. with maybe an engine cover/rocker covers? dunno yet.
    reason being is
    a) no money for rims or bodykit
    b) it will get scraped to sh*t as my pop is using it as a daily as it was his car (he lives with us)
    c) attracts thieves and vandals to the car and where i live no doubt there will be some jackass with the brilliant idea to throw a brick through the window of a nice car :P

well sorry for the lengthy post, ill save it for the my ride section, btw thx for all the info, im only new to the forum but its great already
    cheers

Under the new P-Plate restrictions in Vic this is, ALL engine modifications, including extractors and exhaust are illegal as they are deemed as a "Performance Mod"

It could be an executive or berlina wagon (My rego papers just say commodore sedan as far as i know, not calais)

There should be a badge on the left side of the dash pad, or badgs on the rear that will tel you what it is.

I think there were also Vacationer wagons in VNs, not totally sure tho

On the interior painting, its still in a pressure pack (spray) even tho its called Dye

yea, says executive on the dash, my bad. kk damn looks like i wont be doing a diy CAI as i really dont want to get into any trouble with the car, not into doing stupid stuff or anything so im safe there.

ive decided to do all the interior panels in the same dye of black, im still researching though as i dont want the car to turn out looking like a turd on wheels :P

i need to head to autobarn again as i just bought the amp wiring kit and despite what one guy said it didnt include the rca plugs im not too worried though, i wasnt ripped off if thats what your thinking. any idea what 2 sets of rca's may cost me?

    cheers

You might bash me if I told you I could have bought one of the 4 VLT manual Wagons in factory black paint for $4,500 a couple years ago
