Just wondering if anyone knows if scratch and swirl remover takes any paint off? also does anyone know if using a clay bar removes scratches and swirl marks?
I use scratch and swirl remover on my car all the time and no paint comes off but there is only one product i use for this application i use Auto Glym Ultrafine Renovator 02B this takes out any surface scratches and surface swirls its just like putting on polish
here is the link to the product. hope this helps!

Well if it's a true scratch/swirl remover, then yes, it will remove some paint. See scratches/swirls are below the surface, so the only way to remove them is to "even out" the surface i.e remove some paint. the amount of paint they actually remove is tiny (microscopic) compared to how thick your paint is (or should be).
A clay bar will remove some scratches/swirls but to a lesser degree. Clay bars are more for cleaning bonded contaminants on the paint.
Hope that helps. What brand of scratch & swirl remover are you thinking of using? What sort of condition is your paint in?
Well ive been thinking of using either Meguiars Scratch X or Turtle wax scratch and swirl remover. Although now i think ill try Meguiars Color X. It does the same as scratch X but also revives the colour of the paint as well as minor cleaning of the paint. My Paint is in pretty good condition ive always looked after it. But The boot and especially the Bonnet are really bad, the bonnet looks terrible compared to the rest of the car, i dont think theres much paint left on it.. any suggestions? My current plan is to go over the entire car with Color X, then Use Turtle wax ice regularly to polish it and protect..
Your plan sounds like a good one. Just be careful with the ColorX on the bonnet where you reckon the paint is thin.
I don't know much a bout Turtle Wax Ice, but it sounds like a wax/polish yeah? If you get good results with the ColorX, you might be better off just using a pure wax, such as Meguiars NXT or Gold Class to lock in and protect the shine. Good luck!![]()

Ok so i tried a bit of the colour X in some spots, not impressed, hasnt taken out any swirls at all which it claims it will. Im not sure why the swirls are so bad on my car as i use turtle wash and wax, i use a microfiber wash mitt, maybe its the chamois i use which is in an orange container, Oates i think it is. Anyway i guess i cant get a refund on the color X.. as for the waxes like NXT apparently it doesnt last long at all? Atleast with the ICE its super easy and quick to use so i dont mind applying it all the time.. what are peoples thoughts?
I can't comment about the Ice, since I've never used it, but I find NXT very easy to use and it DOES last a while. My last wax job lasted me 9 months (although my car is a bit of a garage queen - but then a gain it gets washed weekly which tends to deplete wax).
As for your problem with ColorX, I'm tipping it's your technique letting you down. I recommend going to the Meguiars forum Meguiar's Online and posting your problems / experiences there. You will get advice from the experts who really know what they're on about... I'm just an experienced amateur!![]()
Ok thanks for your help! i actually have been browsing the meguirs online website for answers. Think ill sign up as a member it seems very helpful. Im tempted to try NXT but as ive just bought ICE and tried a bit i cant return it. Oh well ill have a real good go at color X then use ICE with a couple of coats and see how i go..
I am not sure if anyone else has used Toughseal, I saw it demonstrated at the motor show a couple of years ago and bought it and applied it to my Adventra. I thought it was great and I also bought another kit to put on my VP. I was a bit sceptical about the claims they made, but I have had it on my Adventra nearly two years now and the shine is still there, not only that, but I poured water over the front guards and it all just drained away leaving the panel dry, no beading. I am pretty impressed, I have never seen a polish last that long and be that good. I recommend it for anyone interested in a great finish that lasts and no I am not a sales rep for the company LOL

swirl marks are created from incorect washing drying and polishing
no wax on wax off haha DO NOT USE CIRULAR MOTIONS always forward and back of side to side and keep turning the cloth over.....
I havd a few swirls and scratches on my black VX ,I used a clay bar then some Meguiars deep crystal paint cleaner which remover all the old polish ,water spots , swirls and light scratches , it came up pretty good.
there are three types of people in the world , those who can count and those who can't
ask any reputable detailer..... its just the way its done as doing it the other way causes these swirl marks....
but straight left right or straigh up down can still do the same thing, it is contamination I thought that causes these swirls.
For example, dried pieces of polish, dust/dirt, etc, etc.
Just a thought.
All I do is keep the applicator slightly moist with a water spray bottle, and the same for the buffer, I turn sides to a clean side regularly and change pads and buffers as soon as I need too, none of this "She'll be right" business, to top it all off, I do it all by hand, i'm not a pro but it always comes up pretty good.
This is a common misconception. Have a read of this:
Circles or Straight Lines? - Car Care Forums: Meguiar's Online
If your combination of product and technique is right, then you shouldn't be instilling any scratches when you wash/dry/polish your car. Hence, it shouldn't and doesn't matter which way you move your hand. Circular motions feel more natural to most people and lend themselves better to large panels such as the bonnet or roof. Some smaller panels and tight spots are better suited to straight line motions. The thing is, if you're doing it right, it shouldn't matter which way you move your hand.
Even if you are instilling scratches in your paint from poor technique and/or product, it'll only mean you're instilling straight line scratches as opposed to circular scratches. Still a bad result either way.
I think the confusion stems from the fact that most swirls or scratches (especially on black or dark paint) appear to be circular when viewed in direct sunlight or under another light source. This is a phenomena known as "cobwebbing". There are actually thousands of little swirls/scratches all over the paint in random directions, but the ones your eye sees are the ones that are around and concentric to the light source. You will notice the circular cobweb moves as you move the light source or as you move your head.
I hope this helps to clear up any confusion.![]()
