Hi everyone i just want to stress some information regarding all keyless entry remotes
i no for some of you it may be comon knowledge that the remote has two functions
1. To operate central locking
2. To disarm the immobiliser and allow the car to start
BUT, everyday i have people confused as to why there car isnt starting so im going to explain it
First of your keyless entry remotes are coded to your car's body control module or for VR, theft deterant module. no other keys will match your car.
Second. batterys in these remote heads are soldered in, the two screws you see are to hold the key blade in only, when pulled apart the remote break so PLEASE DO NOT OPEN UP REMOTE HEADSthere are some exeptions on early model calais and berlina's but if there arent any screws then dont.
Third. most of you will realise your remote is going flat when it no longer unlocks the car or starts to play up, at this stage you should be saving up for your new remote
fourth if your remote goes dead and the bcm cant read it, then the car wont start, at this stage most people call r.a.c.v. (or similar roadside assist) and they will tell you nothing because they arent real mechanics and will probly make things worse by selling you a starter motor.
if you get stuck, there are overide procedures (ask your holden dealer) for VR-VS but for VT onwards, either you use a spare key or pay to have it towed to your holden dealer, which can be very costly
Programing a blank remote to your car involves us using a specialised computer called Tech2 to overide the immobiliser and read your bcm/tdm and program that remote to YOUR car.. Some dealerships require you to book the car in for service to get the remotes done, others like mine we come out and do it in about 5 mins
YOU WILL NEED TO PAY FOR:
a new BLANK remote head/s, 2/4 new screws and a programing fee(varies but is usually $25 fee $30 for VY & VZ
** PRICES VARY depending on if you have a 1,2 or 3 button remote
but usually costs between $90 and $110 all up (per key)
YOU WILL NEED TO HAVE THE CAR PRESENT,- ONCE A REMOTE IS PROGRAMMED TO YOUR CAR IT CANT BE RE-USED ITS YOURS FOR ITS LIFESPAN
- VY/VZ OWNERS NEED TO PROVIDE A BCM SECURITY NUMBER(LOCATED ON THE WHITE SECURITY CARD THAT CAME WITH THE CAR IF NOT PROVIDED A $20 FEE IS CHARGED TO LOOK IT UP
This is great info mate. I knew most of it, but very informative.
you should be able to overide the VS by having the car on ACC for 45 minutes, I would recomend turning everything off however.
Can anyone confirm that?
b.t.w nice post very informative.
If you cant change the battery and need a new key, how long normally does the battery last
obviously you didnt read my post, they can last anywhere from 3 years to 10 years depending on its use/lack of use its like anything if you use it more then it wont last as long, as i said above, we recommend that if you have 2 keys swap them every month or two. they are a lithium battery if i remember correctly
and i forgot to mention, that vy and vz commodores require a bcm security number to do a key.. its located on the white wallet size card that contains your radio pin and security information etc. it should have come with your service books
my apoligies loll i didnt write it in! i was thinking of the gu i was talking to about it today
As for the override features... can you imagine a car thief sitting in your car for 45 minutes with the key barrel set to ACC? I can't. Besides, if they're anything like Toyota's the time increases once you turn the car off. So the second time in a row you need to use the override it increased to an hour or so on. It's really something for you to get to a dealer so they can replace the key/BCM if needed.
I haven't lost my mind, it's backed up on tape somewhere
I went to press the unlock button on my remote head and it did nothing, so I then unlocked car with keys, and when i opened door - the twin airhorns blared out at me for about a minute!!! Thankfully my mum located where spare remote key was.
Now I need to replace my remote. i've noticed that at knox s/c there is a place that does remote keys for holdens, not sure if it is actually the remote head as well.
I'm in sth east suburbs, anywhere around this area that does it apart from rip off Barloworld and other holden dealers?
Cheers,

haha a fellow from glenny. I think mister minit does them in the glen shopping center. He used to have a sign out the front of his store that said he fixes holden keys..
ok dude how much would it cost for this key programmed?
My VP has remote central locking....can I replace the battery? It has one tiny Allen key screw.
My VY Does the same if i unlock my doors using the key but you will find that the alarm will shut off once you have put your key into the ignition and have turned it to the acc position because your key would have started communicating with the car via the metal strip on the outside ignition.
yer ok this is what happens, occasionally they go out of tune and wont unlock, what you have to do is open the car manually, turn it on to acc. and with the doors closed press the lock and unlock buttons randomly, this retunes it for some reason, as for the signs at your shopping centre, it means that they CUT the blades there but they can NOT program remotes no way
they can, there are two types of vn, vp, vq remotes ones just a rectangle and one is a rectangle with a grove cut out underneith (contour to fit your hand) basically its either a mongoose alarm system or a holden factory system, the mongoose remotes arent replaceable through holden the holden ones (most vp's) can have the battery changed its a stumpy aaa looking style of battery
remotes need to be done at holden dealers, no point in complaining about the prices, if you want it done properly then do it properly, i cant count how many people have been sold holden remotes from other places and been told that they can be programmed by pressing buttons, only to bring it to us and have to pay anyway..
one guy pretended that he programmed it himself and then erased it and made it blank again, which is impossible because commodore remotes cant ever be erased.. he spent half an hour trying to get out of paying a measly $25 program fee
i got a whole new key/remote for my vs at mister minute in werribee plaza for a bit over $100 a few months ago and it works fine. all he needed was the original key.
my battery went dead a few months ago, one trick to get the car started is to hold the unlock button while cranking the engine over.
worked for me until i got a replacement.
I went to macarthur locksmiths 120 bucks and i now have a good spare...BUT i will swap keys every now n then to keep em going.
yer there probly is other machines that do it now, im guessing theyd duplicate the exsisting key, ours a programmed to the bcm so i duno what ever is better i guess
yes there are commercially available programmers that do them, programming it with tech2 is simple but copying one with the new gear is even quicker,
do a google search im sure theres some info around.lol

Is it possible to do a VP S1 remote code on say a VR single button key head?
I have the vehicle security details, from getting my current remote from Bay City Holden, who were very helpful. The only issue was it never worked quite right, and now it's quit entirely... what a waste of money. I think it's a mongoose, as Bay City had to get it shipped in from interstate pre-coded, and yes, you can change the battery on these ones.
