Default apparent tappet noise on start up ?

    Hi all

My VY SS has just started making a apparent tappet noise for a second or so after start up but disappears shortly after starting , this has started appear just after I had a service and for the first time I did not use Militec metal conditioner in the oil change ,, The strangest thing happened first as when i went drive it the next day after the service , I got a hundred meters from home and the management system told me i had no oil , I pulled over , Checked the dip stick and it showed no oil , , I Walked home and got oil and added it ( 1 Ltr ) till it showed on he dip stick . taking it back to the mechanic the next day, he drained it with a measure taken and it should one Litre over fill .
And now I have this tappet noise on start up that disappears just as quick ,, Oil level is Ok Any thoughts please !! . Craig mack

they are noisy engines on startup anyway, As what oil you used, if you used friction modifer it helps quiet it down, also maybe use a thicker oil as too thin and its noisey, too thick and it takes too long to get to the top off the motor and will also be noisey, i would use an oil just alil thicker then recomended for peice off mind/engine protection rather then thin oil to gain power but leaving little room for errors. also maybe try fully synthetic oil if your not doing so already, (ROYAL PURPLE) comes to mind, top shelf stuff.

as for your oil issues with too much/too little on dip stick, did you change oil
and as you put in 5L check level, then add another 700ml then check level

( think they take around 5.7l off oil or alil more including filter, i have it writen down in the car)

then let it run for 10 minutes, stop engine then let it settle, then check again if its needing more top up, but why it would show you need more when you dont, NFI, unless you checked it when it was too hot and all the oil was still at the top/middle off the motor?

i find over fil it 100ml or 200 ml is ok but anymore ull just burn it and will be a waste. however im no mechanic just what ive done on my own vy ss, and other cars ive had over the years, someone on here with alil more experience with servicing LS1s will help you out.

just a tip, you only have to let it run for a minute max, ur just waisting ur fuel letting it sit longer

well im only going by what my mechanic used to do and with all the additives i add to my oil/friction modifier it states in BOLD LETTERS run car for 10-15 minutes to get temp up and work the products into the engine, maybe we are wrong but its worked for me for the last 15 years (two years less the your age :O) , could be old school thinking but i would rather take the advice off a 50yr old that works on high end v8s and worked ls1s then a whipper snipper fresh out off school (is that a RED p plate i see on your car?) , either way back on topic no offence just having a dig, why do you think his oil light would off come on after oil change then? at least help post something constructive towards the posts topic

yeah no worries, you are using an additive so yeah go by that, i didnt know lol, but generally just oil and filter theres no advantage to run the car for 10mins,
